Podcast Overview

Random thoughts from a therapist, an expert in clinical hypnosis, a counselor and an author by trade taking a view that is not about right, wrong, good or bad. Here Kurt LaRose (from TalkifUwant.com) attempts to move away from black or white thinking where absolutist binds CAN aid in "mental illness" formulation. There is good in all of us - where matters of safety are exceptions. From religion, sex, politics, love, death, moms, dads and "just life" - something here may tickle your biases a bit. Using snark, with new and old psychobabblejabble - this is my voice. https://TalkifUwant.com

Lotto and midterm election spends break world and US records while 1 in 6 can't pay utility bills.

The US has made history - we have raised 1.6 billion dollars in 3 months for the world's biggest lotto ever!  And with only 4 days until the 2022 midterms we've spent more in elections in the US than in our entire history; coming in at 16.7 billion dollars. We are dreamers and we can get stuff done when it comes to money but somehow 1 in 6 US folks on fixed income cannot pay their current utility bills. How can these three things be related? Here's an alternative view about possibilities and how we might help.

Children being shot in a classroom leads a therapist to wonder what it will take for change.

This is not the first time a shooting has lead to victims in the US. And it's not the first time we as a collective society have been angered and dismayed and saddened by the loss of life. As the finger pointing and blame emerges with the recent shooting in an elementary school in Texas - a collective trauma to a country is explored. Ways that people hurt, knowing that people care and understanding how access to things that can harm - these things are all bluntly considered. Access to healthcare and access to guns might be part of predicting both help and danger. Understanding gun access and understanding symptoms is one part of this Podcast; understanding that it takes safe people to make our culture safe is the other part. When an escalating culture occurs, it might be out of our compassion that this takes place, and unfortunately it may inadvertently impair our ability to poblem solve. There's plenty of blame to look at - but what gives? How do we give time to our losses - and - recover enough to move to something better? How do we talk openly about such tragedies - and- protect our children and each other? What can you do if you or your loved one is unsure if you or they are safe? This Podcast is powerful, sad, and thought provoking in a way that maybe, just maybe, we can get to a safer place.

Treating trans youth and new abuse reporting laws... at least one provider is scared.

Laws that require mental health providers to report families of gender affirming care for minors are too controversial. Mental health treatment doesn't really have to happen in courtrooms or in politics. Treatment could be holistic, all inclusive, documented, ethical, professional and science based. Here a talk therapist takes an alternative view to helping people see third options ... like focusing on patient care and evidence based outcomes - for starters. Laws are supposedly for the good of the public.... providers are supposedly for the good of the patients. Maybe these will, from time to time, end up in court. And even so, providers have options to successfully treat trans populations.
