Prostate Health for Black Men: What You Need to Know About Prostate Cancer and Screening

For Apple Podcasts and Spotify, I’d make this shorter and more conversational than the YouTube description, while deliberately working the major search terms—prostate cancer, Black men, prostate health, PSA test, prostate cancer screening, early detection, and Black men’s health—into the opening paragraphs. Apple Podcasts & Spotify Description Prostate cancer affects Black men at disproportionately high rates—but how much do we really know about prostate health, PSA testing, and early detection? In this episode of Raw and Refined: The Gentlemen’s Hour, Rich sits down with co-host and internal medicine physician Dr. John Card for a candid conversation about prostate health and prostate cancer in Black men. John brings the medical expertise, while Rich asks the questions many brothers have—but may not always ask their doctors. What exactly does the prostate do? When should Black men begin talking to their doctors about prostate cancer screening? What is a PSA test, and what does your PSA number actually mean? Does an elevated PSA mean you have cancer? Why does tracking your PSA over time matter? And does prostate screening still involve the infamous “finger wave”? John explains why knowing your family medical history matters, symptoms that could signal prostate problems, and what may happen when a PSA result raises concerns—from repeat testing and imaging to biopsy and a Gleason score. Rich and John also have the conversation many men really want to hear: What happens if prostate cancer is found? They discuss active surveillance and treatment options, along with potential effects on urinary control, erections, and sexual function. They also examine diet, exercise, weight, smoking, stress, and the lifestyle choices that support better overall health. But this episode goes beyond prostate cancer. It’s a conversation about Black men taking control of our health, developing relationships with healthcare providers, learning our family history, and becoming more comfortable talking with our fathers, brothers, sons, uncles, nephews, and friends about the health issues we too often keep to ourselves. Pasted text.txt You probably know your blood pressure. You may know your cholesterol or A1C. But do you know your PSA? Know your numbers. Know your family history. Talk to your doctor. And talk to each other. Young Black Men are Dying by Suicide at Historic Rates: What is Happening to Our Sons?

For the first time in recorded U.S. history, young Black men between the ages of 16 and 29 are dying by suicide at higher rates than their white counterparts. This historic shift demands more than awareness—it demands action. In this powerful episode of Raw and Refined: The Gentlemen’s Hour, Rich, John, and Greg welcome Keon Lewis, a nationally recognized suicide prevention leader and member of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Chapter Leadership Council, for an honest conversation about one of the most urgent public health crises facing the Black community. Together, they examine the latest CDC data and explore the complex factors contributing to this alarming trend, including unresolved trauma, racism, emotional suppression, identity, social media, access to culturally competent mental health care, and the stigma that continues to prevent too many Black men from seeking help. John, an internal medicine physician, leads a thoughtful discussion with Keon on recognizing warning signs, supporting young men before they reach a crisis, and the critical roles families, mentors, churches, fraternities, educators, and communities play in creating hope and connection. This isn’t a conversation about statistics alone. It’s a conversation about our sons, brothers, nephews, students, and friends—and what each of us can do to help change the trajectory. Whether you’re a parent, mentor, healthcare professional, educator, faith leader, or someone looking to better understand the challenges facing young Black men today, this episode offers insight, compassion, and practical guidance. If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide or experiencing a mental health crisis in the United States, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Raise a glass with us as we tackle another important conversation—because the truth is raw, but our delivery is refined.
