Federal Retirement Changes: What’s New—and What Stayed the Same
Federal retirement rules are always surrounded by proposed changes, workplace rumors and plenty of unanswered questions. But which changes actually happened—and which ones never made it across the finish line?
In this episode, Rayna reviews several important developments affecting federal and postal employees. She explains the move toward online retirement and disability applications, what supporting documents may still need to be uploaded and why employees should carefully review forms generated through the online retirement application system.
Rayna also clears up lingering questions about the FERS supplement, employee pension contributions and proposals to replace the high-3 pension calculation with a high-5 average. She discusses the new ability to complete Roth conversions within the TSP and explains why the tax consequences should be considered before moving a large amount of money.
Finally, Rayna offers an important reminder: The wait for interim retirement payments and final processing is still very real. Preparing adequate cash reserves—and knowing how the TSP might serve as a backup—can help make the transition into retirement less stressful.
