   DEVO

We’re diving into the Devo documentary and asking you to come think it through with us. Were they satirists or prophets? A joke band or the most accurate band of the last fifty years? We break down how “de-evolution” went from an art-school theory born out of Kent State to a genuine framework for understanding conformity, mass culture, and why the energy dome hats were never really about the hats. Expect Eno, Bowie, MTV’s early chaos, and a real argument about whether Devo were ahead of their time or just early to being right. Cutting thru the noise on one of new wave’s most misunderstood bands; jump in and tell us where you land.

Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That's the Weight of the World)

A documentary that had every reason to soar and somehow stayed grounded. We dig into where the Questlove-produced look at Earth, Wind & Fire goes wrong the moments it skips, the questions it won’t ask, and the difference between celebrating a legacy and actually examining one. EWF reshaped what a Black American band could sound like and look like, fusing jazz, funk, R&B and cosmic showmanship into something genuinely radical. This film just doesn’t have the nerve to dig into how they did it.

   The Sparks Brothers

The Sparks Brothers is Edgar Wright’s 2021 documentary charting the singular career of Ron and Russell Mael two brothers from Los Angeles who have been confounding audiences and reinventing themselves since 1972. Witty, obsessive, and completely unlike anything else in rock, Sparks spent five decades defying genre, geography, and expectation. Wright’s film makes the case convincingly that they may be the most important band you’ve never properly listened to.
