Season 5, Episode 3 A multinational peacekeeping force was established in 1992 to address the humanitarian crisis ensued in the Balkans after the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. NATO and European Union missions continued post 1995, in an attempt to restore peace. Canada contributed military personnel to both UN and NATO missions until 2000, with units from The RCR involved in some of the most significant events in this region ravaged by civil war between Bosnians, Croatians, and Serbs, of Christian and Muslim faiths. Season 5, Episode 2 The Security Council Resolution 186 established the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) on 4 March 1964. Over 33,000 Canadians have served since the beginning of this mission, but currently only one Canadian officer is assigned to operational staff every year at Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus. Until 1993, about 25 000 Canadian military personnel had deployed to assist Operation SNOWGOOSE, as this mission is known by generations of Canadian military. They patrolled the neutral zone, known as the Green Line, between Greek and Turkish Cypriots to keep the existing tension from starting a conflict. First, Second and Third Battalions of The Royal Canadian Regiment deployed to Cyprus numerous times between 1966 and 1992.
