Nasceu no interior de São Paulo. Em suas obras, ele retratou a realidade social do país. Uma de suas pinturas mais famosas é "Retirantes", criada em 1944.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">O quadro “Retirantes” se encontra no Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP). Nesse quadro, podemos ver uma família de retirantes, imigrantes nordestinos. Os retirantes fugiam da seca e da fome no Nordeste.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">A pintura "Retirantes" é marcada por sua paleta de cores sombrias. Os personagens são quatro adultos e cinco crianças, todos com expressões que transmitem desespero e cansaço. Os adultos não parecem nada saudáveis e as crianças estão doentes.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">A importância social da obra é evidente na escolha dos elementos visuais. Portinari inclui detalhes como urubus voando sobre o grupo e o solo seco sem vegetação, que reforçam a ideia de abandono e morte iminente.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">Mas por que ele pintou os retirantes assim?</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif">Portinari acreditava que a arte nunca é neutra e sempre carrega uma mensagem social. Ele queria que suas pinturas fossem um reflexo da realidade brasileira.</span></span></p>
