[…] You realise that when they're talking amongst themselves they have got these frustrations to their hopes and their loves and their lives. Interesting perspective in terms of that being something that binds them together. I would say that the book is about their ambition and about their desires but it's also about the obstacles they face. That's not to say that the book is about their lives being only struggle because it's also a celebration of their lives. And it's a celebration of them and all their diversity and complexity and with all their flaws and so on. But as a writer of fiction one has to think about what are the problems your characters are going to encounter because that is the meter fiction. […]
