[…] And what we realized early on was that it's very difficult to determine what actually constitutes a drawing in de Kooning's practice because he famously said, well, I'm drawing, I'm painting. Well, I'm painting, I'm drawing. He didn't make a great distinction between the two. And many of his works can be characterized or defined as a, quote-unquote, drawing according to the typical definition of what constitutes a drawing, graphite on paper or charcoal on paper or pastel on paper. But he often creates hybrid works, paintings with a great deal of drawing within those paintings. He was also trained primarily as a draftsman. […]
