Real Roman History

About Real Roman History

Real Roman History is a comprehensive, chronological account of Rome from its origins to its end—told with the depth the subject deserves. This is not a highlight reel. Every major figure, every turning point, and every war gets the full treatment: the stories as the Romans told them, the ancient sources and what they got right and wrong, and the historical arguments that scholars are still having today. Hugo Prudentius takes listeners from the kings of the early city through the Republic, the civil wars, the empire, and beyond—episode by episode, in sequence, without skipping the parts that made Rome what it was. If other Roman history podcasts have left you wanting more, you've found the right one.

Episode 97. Agricola and the British Frontier

Works Cited Primary Sources Cassius Dio. Roman History, Book 67. Surviving through the eleventh-century epitome of John Xiphilinus. The Domitianic narrative is heavily filtered through the Tacitean tradition and the broader senatorial hostility. Particularly important for the assassination chronology and the Sarmatian campaign of 92, where Dio preserves details not in Suetonius. Epictetus. Discourses. Recorded by Arrian around 108 CE in Nicopolis. Our principal evidence for Epictetus's teaching after the 93 expulsion from Italy. The Stoic philosophical tradition that Domitian had attempted to suppress at Rome continued in Nicopolis through Epictetus and from there entered the Roman intellectual tradition that produced Marcus Aurelius. Pliny the Younger. Letters. Published in collections beginning around 100 CE. The principal contemporary source for the experience of the terror as remembered. Letters 1.5 (the fear of Aquilius Regulus), 4.11 (the Cornelia case quoted in detail in Part Four), 7.19 (Fannia and the Helvidius trial aftermath), and 9.13 (Pliny's prosecution of Publicius Certus after the assassination) are the principal letters used. Read with explicit awareness that Pliny was constructing a usable past for his own post-Domitianic career. Pliny the Younger. Panegyricus. The speech praising Trajan delivered to the Senate in 100 CE. Established the Trajan-versus-Domitian contrast template that organised imperial historiography for the next several centuries. The acknowledgement at Panegyricus 52 of the contradiction in the senatorial order between honouring Domitian when alive and condemning him after death is quoted in Part Seven. Suetonius. Life of Domitian, in The Twelve Caesars. The principal biographical source for the terror and the assassination. Chapters 10–17 cover the late reign with the maiestas trials, the omens, the assassination scene, and the death of Stephanus. Read with the same hostility-awareness applied throughout the Domitianic treatment. Suetonius wrote under Hadrian, approximately twenty-five years after the assassination, inheriting the Tacitean framework and concretising it through biographical catalogue. Tacitus. Agricola. Published 98 CE, two years after Domitian's assassination. The proem at Agricola 2–3, quoted directly in Part Five, is the foundational text of the post-Domitianic literary opposition. The biography of Tacitus's father-in-law is also the analytical centrepiece for how a senator could have survived the reign while remaining politically respectable. The full character treatment of the Agricola itself is the subject of Episode 97. Tacitus. Annals. Published approximately 110 to 120 CE. The work covered Roman history from the death of Augustus in 14 through the death of Nero in 68. Tacitus's mature achievement and the foundational document of the Western political tradition reading imperial monarchy as inherently tyrannical. The model constructed for Tiberius through Nero is the model applied retrospectively to Domitian by the post-Domitianic tradition. Tacitus. Germania. Published 98 CE in the same year as the Agricola. The ethnographic study of the Germanic peoples is also a coded comparison between Germanic simplicity and Roman corruption. Essential evidence for the post-Domitianic literary framework of using ethnographic comparison to comment indirectly on Roman political conditions. Tacitus. Histories. Published approximately 100 to 110 CE. The work covered Roman history from the death of Galba in 69 through the assassination of Domitian in 96. Books 1 through 4 and the beginning of Book 5 are extant. The books covering the Domitianic period itself are lost, the loss probably not accidental but possibly so. Archaeological and Material Evidence The Cancelleria reliefs, Vatican Museums, Rome. Two large marble reliefs found in the Cancelleria in Rome in 1937–1938. One panel shows Domitian's adventus, the other the profectio. The Domitianic head on one panel was recut to portray Nerva after the damnatio. The visible evidence of the erasure programme on imperial monumental art. Damnatio memoriae epigraphic erasures. Systematic chiselling of Domitian's name from inscriptions across the empire, documented archaeologically across thousands of surviving monuments. The pattern of erasure is the visible evidence of the political scope of the senatorial reaction following the assassination. Domitianic coinage of 89 to 96 CE. The numismatic record continues normally throughout the terror period. The continued operational coinage demonstrates that the administrative state was functioning while the political crisis at Rome deepened. The evidence supports the broader institutional record that the empire continued to be competently administered during the late reign. The Forum Transitorium (Forum of Nerva), Rome. Begun under Domitian, completed and dedicated under Nerva after the assassination. The Domitianic name was systematically erased from the foundation inscriptions. The structure preserves the visible record of the immediate post-assassination political action. Secondary Sources Jones, Brian W. The Emperor Domitian. Routledge, 1992. The principal modern scholarly biography. The structural reading of the reign in both Episodes 95 and this one follows Jones throughout. The argument that the terror, while real, has been amplified in scope by the surviving literary tradition is the central modern scholarly position and largely derives from Jones. Southern, Pat. Domitian: Tragic Tyrant. Routledge, 1997. Companion biographical treatment with a slightly different interpretive emphasis. Used for cross-checking the Jones reading and for additional detail on specific episodes including the Cornelia case and the assassination chronology. Syme, Ronald. Tacitus. Oxford University Press, 1958. The foundational two-volume study of Tacitus as historian and political thinker. The reading of the Tacitean tradition as deliberate literary and political project in Part Five follows Syme. The argument that Tacitus's mature historiographical achievement was the construction of a usable model of imperial tyranny for the senatorial political class is the Symean reading.

Episode 95. Domitian, Part One: The Administrator and the Builder

Works Cited Primary Sources Cassius Dio. Roman History, Book 67. Surviving through the eleventh-century epitome of John Xiphilinus. The Domitianic narrative is heavily filtered through the Tacitean tradition and the broader senatorial hostility. The treatment of the Chatti campaign as fraudulent and the Dacian settlement as humiliating both come from this source and should be read as senatorial framing rather than neutral fact. Frontinus. Strategemata. Written during Domitian's reign by a serving senator and consular general who held imperial commands under Vespasian, Domitian, and Nerva. The text is contemporary evidence for Roman military thinking and includes references to Domitianic campaigns. One of the few literary sources from the reign itself rather than the hostile retrospective tradition. Martial. Epigrams, Books 1 through 8. Most published during Domitian's reign. The Domitianic Martial is straightforwardly fawning. Read as evidence for the public face of the regime rather than for the truth about it. Martial's praise of Rabirius, the architect of the Domus Augustana, is used in Part Four. Pliny the Younger. Letters and Panegyricus. Pliny served under Domitian, holding the praetorship in 93 CE. The Panegyricus of 100 CE, delivered for Trajan, established the post-Domitianic image as official record. The Letters contain incidental material on the reign. Both are read with awareness that Pliny was constructing a usable past for the Trajanic regime rather than recording the Domitianic period neutrally. Statius. Silvae. The contemporary court poetry. Statius praised Domitian openly while the emperor was alive. The poems provide contemporary evidence for the official self-presentation of the regime, including the celebration of imperial military victories and the dedication of imperial buildings. Read as panegyric, not as neutral evidence. Suetonius. Life of Domitian, in The Twelve Caesars. The principal biographical source for the reign, read with explicit awareness of its hostility. Chapters 3–9 used for the early administrative phase covered in this episode. The dominus et deus material at Domitian 13 and the early-reign chronology at Domitian 1–2 quoted directly. The hostile framing is consistent across the Life and should not be taken as neutral testimony. Tacitus. Agricola. Written under Trajan around 98 CE. Contains material on the Domitianic period including the famous characterisation of the Chatti campaign as a war pretended rather than fought. Read as evidence for the post-Domitianic senatorial reaction to the reign rather than as neutral testimony about the reign itself. Tacitus. Germania. Written under Trajan around 98 CE. Essential evidence for the Germanic world Domitian was campaigning against on the Rhine frontier. The Chatti are described in detail at Germania 30–31. The longer-arc reading of Roman frontier policy that Tacitus offers is itself substantially shaped by his hostile reading of the Domitianic period. Archaeological and Numismatic Evidence The Capitoline Temple reconstruction, Rome. Domitian's reconstruction of the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus after the fire of 80 CE. Reconsecrated in 82 CE. The structure was rebuilt with extensive use of gold and marble. Ancient reports of 12,000 talents of gold expenditure should be read as illustrative of scale rather than as precise figures. The Domitianic limes Germanicus. The frontier fortification system along the upper Rhine and upper Danube. Watchtowers, palisade lines, paved roads, and the first systematic stone fortification of the German frontier. Archaeologically documented from systematic surveys conducted by German archaeologists from the 1890s onward. The principal evidence for the institutional achievement of the Domitianic reign that the literary tradition does not record. Domitianic silver denarius coinage and metallurgical analysis. The principal numismatic evidence for the currency reform of 82 CE. Modern X-ray fluorescence and chemical analysis of dated coins shows the silver content moving from approximately 90 percent under Vespasian and Titus to approximately 98 percent in coins struck in 82 and the following years. The 85 partial reversal to approximately 93 percent is similarly documented. The metallurgical record is the principal evidence for the fiscal administrative competence of the reign. The Domus Augustana (Domus Flavia), Palatine Hill, Rome. The imperial palace complex begun under Domitian and substantially completed during his reign. The structure served every subsequent Roman emperor through the Severan period as the working imperial residence. Architect: Rabirius, praised by Martial as the equal of the great Greek architects of antiquity. The principal monumental evidence for the Domitianic building programme. The Forum Transitorium (Forum of Nerva), Rome. Begun under Domitian, completed and dedicated by Nerva after Domitian's assassination. The Domitianic name was systematically erased from the inscriptions as part of the damnatio memoriae. The structure includes the Temple of Minerva at its centre. Saturninus revolt epigraphic evidence. The damnatio memoriae of Lucius Antonius Saturninus produced systematic erasure of his name from inscriptions across the German frontier. The pattern of erasure is documented archaeologically and provides evidence for the geographic scope of the revolt and the subsequent suppression. The Stadium of Domitian, Campus Martius, Rome. The Greek-style athletic stadium for the Capitoline Games instituted by Domitian in 86 CE. Located on the site of the modern Piazza Navona. The largest piece of Greek-style sporting architecture preserved in the western Mediterranean. Secondary Sources Carradice, Ian, and Theodore V. Buttrey. The Roman Imperial Coinage, Volume II. Spink, 2007. The standard catalogue of Domitianic coinage. Used for the metallurgical and chronological framework of the currency reform of 82 and the partial reversal of 85. Jones, Brian W. The Emperor Domitian. Routledge, 1992. The standard modern scholarly biography. The rehabilitation of the administrative record in modern scholarship substantially derives from Jones. The structural reading of the reign in this episode follows Jones throughout, particularly the framing of the dominus et deus formula as substantive recognition of the imperial system's monarchical character rather than as tyrannical pretension. Southern, Pat. Domitian: Tragic Tyrant. Routledge, 1997. Companion biographical treatment with a slightly different interpretive emphasis. Used for cross-checking the Jones reading and for additional detail on specific episodes including the Saturninus revolt and the Dacian settlement. Strobel, Karl. Die Donaukriege Domitians. Habelt, 1989. The standard German treatment of the Domitianic Danube campaigns. Used for the detailed reconstruction of the 86–88 first Dacian War, including the disaster at Tapae and the recovery under Tettius Julianus. Waters, K. H. “The Character of Domitian.” Phoenix, 1964. The foundational article in the modern rehabilitation of Domitian's administrative record. The argument that the literary tradition's character portrait should be read as politically motivated rather than as neutral assessment originates in this article.
