About Reclaiming Identity
Have you wondered why God allowed bad things to happen to you? Do you find yourself second guessing your decisions? Do you feel that no matter how hard you try, your efforts are never good enough? Are you tired of having bad relationships in your family, friends, and significant others? We're so glad you're here! This podcast will give you the tools to help you heal your relationship with God, others, and yourself so that you will have stronger faith, feel confident, and find balance in your life. We are Kristen Zuray, Abbi DeWitt, and Lydia Zuray, a mother/daughter team of Christian Life Coaches and Mentors from the Adi Project. From previously struggling with relational heartbreak, spiritual and emotional abuse, and long term chronic illness- we have struggled to understand God's goodness and His ultimate design for us. We tried to ignore our pain, placed our self-worth in our work, and chased after people's approval only to feel even more lost and rejected. We began to put up walls with the very God who's known for breaking them down. God showed the truth that our identities don't come from our hands. Identity is not about what we do, it's about who God is. We were designed to be a reflection of His image. When we seek to understand and believe in the truth of God's identity and in how He sees us, we begin to heal from our past traumas, grow in confidence, and begin living out in our purposes. If you are ready to reclaim your God-given identity, heal from your relationships, and discover the truth of who God is, then this podcast is for you! So, grab your spiritual armor, a cup of strong coffee, and join us in reclaiming your identity in Christ. Praying for Healing: What If You're Still Suffering?
Have you ever prayed for healing and wondered why you are still suffering? In this episode of Reclaiming Identity, Abbi DeWitt talks about praying for healing, what to do when healing hasn't come yet, and how to stay grounded in the truth of God's character while you wait. Through Scripture, Abbi reminds listeners that every good gift comes from God, that God reveals Himself as Jehovah Rapha, and that ongoing suffering does not mean God is the one harming you. This episode explores: whether pain comes from God what Paul's thorn in the flesh teaches us whether it is okay to keep praying for healing how grace meets us in suffering what faith looks like while we wait If you are in a season of pain, confusion, trauma healing, church hurt recovery, or spiritual exhaustion, this episode offers biblical encouragement and hope. What Is Church? Body of Christ or a Branded Kingdom?
What is the church supposed to be? In this solo episode of Reclaiming Identity, Kristen wrestles with a question that has been growing in her heart for over a year: Has the modern church lost its identity? Drawing from personal experience in church culture, ministry, and painful encounters with unhealthy leadership, Kristen explores how church hurt, spiritual abuse, branding, territorialism, and personality-driven ministry can distort God's design for His people. This episode contrasts man-made church kingdoms with the biblical vision of one Church, one Body, one Head, and one mission. You'll hear reflection on: the difference between the Church as Christ's Body and the church as a brand how pride, abuse of authority, and platform-building damage the witness of the Church what Scripture says about unity in the Body of Christ why local congregations matter, but are never meant to become isolated kingdoms practical questions to help you discern whether a church is furthering a mission or operating like a franchise If you've ever felt discouraged by church culture but still love the Bride of Christ, this episode will give language to that tension and point you back to God's original vision. Spiritual Abuse in Church Leadership: Is it "Spiritual Authority" or a control issue?
What happens when a spiritual leader crosses the boundary of the authority God gave them? In this episode of Reclaiming Identity, Abigail DeWitt explores spiritual abuse in church leadership and how control, pride, and unhealthy authority can damage both people and the growth of God's church. Drawing from 1 Peter 2, Romans 12, 1 Peter 5, and Acts 6, Abigail unpacks God's design for healthy church leadership. True spiritual leaders are called to shepherd, serve, protect, and care for God's people—not build brands, demand control, or create mini kingdoms. This episode covers: how spiritual abuse can show up in leadership why control and pride distort church growth the difference between biblical care and abusive authority what the early church teaches about shared gifts and Spirit-led leadership why healing from church hurt begins with understanding God's true design If you've struggled with trusting spiritual authority or are sorting through pain from unhealthy church leadership, this episode offers biblical clarity, hope, and direction. Church Shunning: Why it's not Biblical
What is shunning, and is it ever biblical? In this episode of Reclaiming Identity, Kristen Zuray shares why church shunning is not the same as biblical discipline. While Scripture does address correction and separation in certain cases, true discipline is meant for restoration, healing, and protection. Shunning is something very different. Kristen explores how shunning in church often functions as spiritual abuse—cutting people off, isolating them from community, punishing them for asking questions, and pressuring others to choose loyalty to a leader over healthy relationships. In this episode, she discusses: the definition of shunning why shunning is unbiblical how shunning differs from biblical discipline the emotional and spiritual effects of being shunned how shunning distorts a person's identity and view of God warning signs of toxic church culture when it may be time to leave an unhealthy church If you've experienced church hurt, religious trauma, or spiritual abuse recovery, this conversation offers language, clarity, and validation for what you may have lived through. Shunning is not rooted in love, forgiveness, or restoration. It is rooted in rejection, control, and punishment. And it has no place among the people of God. Want to work together? What happens when spiritual abuse and church hurt distort your view of God, discipleship, and your own identity? Spiritual Abuse vs Church Hurt: 6 Red Flags You Shouldn't Ignore

In this episode, Kristen and Abbi discuss what spiritual abuse can look like and why many Christians recognize pain in church but don't always have language for abuse, manipulation, control, and misuse of spiritual authority. Drawing from their lived experiences and observations over decades, they explain how spiritual abuse in church often hides behind religious language, ministry culture, and outward appearances of health. They break down 6 major red flags of spiritual abuse: deflection of responsibility instilling fear exaggerated spiritual authority or overbearing power self-serving motivations undefined or moving expectations twisting Scripture This episode is for anyone who has ever wondered: Was that really God? Authenticity: How to be yourself Confidently and honestly
What does it mean to live authentically after trauma? Many people believe trauma changes who they are forever. In reality, while painful experiences may change how we function, they do not change the identity God has given us. Kristen Zuray and Abbi DeWitt discuss authenticity, overcoming people-pleasing, navigating life transitions, and learning to honestly embrace each season of life without guilt or shame. Abbi shares her personal story of adjusting to pregnancy, motherhood, and physical limitations while discovering that authenticity means living truthfully with confidence—not pretending to be who you used to be. In this episode you'll learn: • How trauma impacts authenticity • Why healthy boundaries matter • How to overcome guilt and shame • Biblical encouragement for living confidently • Practical ways to embrace your identity in Christ Whether you're healing from trauma, recovering from church hurt, or simply longing to live more honestly, this episode offers practical and biblical encouragement for walking confidently in who God created you to be. Do painful experiences still shape how you see yourself, others, or even God? Is Life Unbalanced? Here is How To Bring Balance Through Identity
Is Life Unbalanced? Here's How to Bring Balance Into Your Life Through Identity | Reclaiming Identity Podcast Are you constantly doing more but feeling less fulfilled? Have achievements, productivity, ministry, or responsibilities left you emotionally exhausted instead of joyful? In this week's episode of Reclaiming Identity, Host Abbi sits down with Lydia Zuray for an honest and powerful conversation about what happens when life becomes unbalanced — and how losing balance can slowly disconnect you from your identity, peace, and relationship with God. Lydia shares her personal journey of living in an overworked, emotionally drained season where her identity slowly began shifting to meet the expectations and needs of everyone around her. From ministry pressures to nonstop productivity, she opens up about how imbalance affected her emotionally, spiritually, and mentally — and what it took to finally break free from that cycle. In this episode, they discuss: How to recognize when your life has become unbalanced Why productivity and achievement can quietly become identity The emotional signs of imbalance: stress, anxiety, confusion, exhaustion, and feeling lost How fear and people-pleasing can fuel an overworked lifestyle The spiritual impact of neglecting your "secret place" with the Lord Why even good things like ministry can become unhealthy when rooted in fear instead of obedience Lydia and Abbi also unpack the deeper lies that often produce an unbalanced life, including: "The more productive I am, the more significant I become." "If I stop, I will fail people." "My value comes from what I accomplish." Together, they explore the biblical story of Mary and Martha and the importance of seeking God first instead of allowing work, chaos, or external expectations to consume your identity. In this episode, Lydia shares 5 practical steps that helped her move from burnout and imbalance into peace, clarity, and healing: Spend intentional time with the Lord Change environments that are no longer healthy Learn strategic rest Allow yourself to be alone and face what's happening internally Move forward boldly into who God created you to be This conversation is for anyone who feels overwhelmed, emotionally depleted, disconnected from themselves, or trapped in a cycle of constantly doing without truly living. If you've been sacrificing peace for productivity, this episode will encourage you to slow down, reconnect with God, and reclaim your identity outside of performance and achievement. ✨ FREE Coaching Session Available Our 1-on-1 coaching is designed to help you break free from what's been holding you back, deepen your understanding of your identity in God, and walk confidently in your purpose. What is identity and Why is identity important?
Who are you when the titles, roles, and expectations fall away? In the very first episode of Reclaiming Identity, host Abbi DeWitt sits down with Kristen Zuray—founder of the Adi Project, trauma-informed coach, author, and speaker—to explore one of the most important questions we can ask ourselves: What is identity? Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt disconnected from the person staring back at you? Maybe you've spent years defining yourself by your relationships, career, responsibilities, or the expectations of others—only to feel lost when life changes. In this honest and deeply personal conversation, Kristen shares her own journey of discovering who she truly was beyond the labels of pastor's wife, cop's wife, executive director, author, and founder. Together, Abbi and Kristen unpack how identity is shaped by our upbringing, relationships, trauma, faith, values, and life experiences—and why understanding your identity changes everything. From the decisions we make to the relationships we build, identity influences our confidence, emotional health, purpose, and resilience through life's hardest seasons. If you've ever struggled with insecurity, people-pleasing, feeling unseen, or wondering where you truly belong, this episode will remind you that you are not alone—and that healing and clarity are possible. This episode also introduces the heart behind the Adi Project, the mission of Reclaiming Identity, and the hope that comes from rediscovering who you were created to be.
