Truth With Grace: How To Handle Conflict | Jesus The Tested Teacher | Matthew 5:38-48
Date: 10/18/26 Speaker: Pastor Will Broadus Passage: Matthew 5:38-48 Series: Jesus The Tested Teacher CENTRAL MESSAGE: Jesus teaches us to deal with difficult people through truthful, principled grace. KEY SCRIPTURES: Matthew 5:38–48; Leviticus 19:18; John 18:19–23; Psalm 3; Romans 5:6–8. ——————————————— SUMMARY: How do we respond to difficult people without compromising the truth or allowing conflict to turn into bitterness and revenge? In this message, we examine Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount and discover that Christian maturity includes learning to navigate difficult conversations with both conviction and compassion. Jesus does not call us to ignore wrongdoing, excuse sin, or become passive in the face of mistreatment. Instead, he teaches us to resist evil without becoming vengeful, pursue justice through appropriate channels, and actively do good to those with whom we disagree. We also consider how Jesus himself models this balance. The gospel does not minimize our sin; it confronts our need honestly while demonstrating the extraordinary grace of Christ, who died for us while we were still sinners. TAKEAWAYS: - Conflict is an opportunity to practice Christian discipleship. - Emotional reactions can escalate disagreements into something much worse. - Justice and revenge are not the same. - Showing grace does not require tolerating wrongdoing or avoiding difficult conversations. - Loving our enemies means seeking their good and praying for genuine repentance. - Compassion without truth can become compromise. - Jesus demonstrates how to confront sin while extending sacrificial love. ——————————————— REFLECTION QUESTIONS: 1. Where are you tempted to avoid a necessary conversation? 2. How can you address wrongdoing without seeking revenge? 3. What practical act of kindness could you offer someone you find difficult to love? ——————————————— CHAPTERS: 00:00 Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:38–48 01:25 Handling Conflict as a Christian 04:44 Responding Without Retaliation 08:37 Understanding “Turn the Other Cheek” 12:18 Justice Versus Revenge 19:10 Practicing Grace Toward Difficult People 24:45 Loving Your Enemies 29:50 How Jesus Demonstrates Truth and Grace 32:35 Balancing Compassion and Truth ——————————————— Please visit our website at reconcilecc.org for any questions. God’s Law: Guard, Examiner, & Guide | Jesus The Tested Teacher | Matthew 5:17-37
Date: 10/11/26 Speaker: Pastor Will Broadus Series: Jesus The Tested Teacher Passage: Matthew 5:17-37 What is God’s law for—and how should Christians respond to it? In Matthew 5:17–37, Jesus shows us that God’s commands are about more than outward obedience. They reveal the condition of our hearts and point us toward the righteousness we cannot achieve on our own. In this sermon, we explore three purposes of God’s law: - Guard: God’s commands restrain wrongdoing, even when our hearts have not yet changed. - Mirror: Scripture exposes the sin, motives, and desires beneath our outward behavior. - Guide: Through the forgiveness of Jesus Christ and the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, God’s Word directs us toward a life of holiness. Jesus takes familiar commands about murder, adultery, marriage, and oaths deeper, confronting anger, lust, selfishness, and dishonesty. Rather than hiding from what God’s Word reveals, we can face our sin honestly because Jesus offers forgiveness and the power to change. In this message, we explore: - Why Jesus came to fulfill the law, not abolish it - Why external obedience cannot save us - How God’s commands reveal the true condition of our hearts - What anger, lust, and dishonesty reveal about our motives - How the gospel frees us from shame and empowers real change - Why spiritual growth requires patience and dependence on the Holy Spirit ——————————————— TAKEAWAYS: - God’s law serves as a guard, a mirror, and a guide. It restrains wrongdoing, reveals our sin, and directs us toward a life of holiness. - Jesus calls us beyond outward obedience. God is concerned not only with our actions but also with the motives, desires, and attitudes of our hearts. - God’s Word reveals our need for grace. When we honestly examine ourselves against God’s standards, we recognize that we cannot achieve righteousness through our own efforts. - The gospel offers both forgiveness and transformation. Through Jesus Christ, we can face our sin honestly and pursue change through the power of the Holy Spirit. - Spiritual growth requires intentional action. Resisting temptation, pursuing reconciliation, and living with integrity require practical steps and a willingness to address sin rather than ignore it. - Holiness is a lifelong journey. Genuine transformation takes time, and we grow as we continually depend on God’s grace and the work of the Holy Spirit. ——————————————— CHAPTERS: 00:00 Scripture Reading — Matthew 5:17–37 03:40 The Purpose of God’s Law 05:37 Guard, Mirror, and Guide 07:23 Jesus Fulfills the Law 13:53 Examining the Heart: Anger and Lust 21:04 Marriage, Faithfulness, and Honesty 25:03 Why We Need the Gospel 30:52 Growing in Holiness Takes Time ——————————————— Please visit our website at reconcilecc.org for any questions. A Disciple’s Posture & Practice | Matthew 5:1-16
Date: 10/4/26 Speaker: Pastor Will Broadus Passage: Matthew 5:1-16 Series: Jesus The Tested Teacher SERMON SUMMARY: What does it actually look like to follow Jesus? In Matthew 5:1–16, Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount by describing the posture and practices that should characterize his disciples. The Beatitudes reveal that following Jesus begins with honest humility—recognizing our spiritual poverty, mourning over brokenness, hungering for righteousness, and depending completely on God’s mercy. But humility doesn’t remain internal. A heart that has received God’s mercy begins to show mercy. A heart transformed by the gospel pursues integrity, works for peace, stands for truth, and remains faithful even when following Jesus brings opposition. Jesus then calls his disciples to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world—not by becoming proud or self-righteous, but by living distinctly in a way that points people toward God. The Christian life isn’t about pretending that we have it all together. It’s about knowing that we need Jesus and allowing his grace to shape how we live, love, serve, and respond to a broken world. Jesus’ disciples ought to have a humble posture and honorable practices. IN THIS SERMON: - What the Beatitudes actually mean - Why being “poor in spirit” is the starting point of discipleship - Why Christians shouldn’t wait until they have their lives together to come to Jesus - How receiving God’s mercy changes the way we treat others - What it means to have a pure heart - Why biblical peace is more than simply avoiding conflict - Why following Jesus can lead to persecution - How Jesus fulfills the Beatitudes perfectly on our behalf - Why Christians should remain humble instead of becoming “Christian experts” - What it means to be salt and light in the world - How humility, truth, compassion, and service shape Christian witness ——————————————— CHAPTERS: 00:00 — Matthew 5:1–16 | The Sermon on the Mount 03:03 — A Disciple’s Posture and Practice 04:00 — Jesus Is the Authoritative Teacher 05:22 — The Beatitudes and the Humble Heart 09:49 — Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit 15:48 — Mercy, Integrity, and Peacemaking 21:23 — Truth, Persecution, and Following Jesus 23:53 — Jesus Is the Blessed Man for Us 27:41 — When Following Jesus Brings Opposition 30:13 — Be Salt and Light 31:00 — Humility Makes a Different Kind of Christian 33:08 — A Scripture-Shaped Community 34:23 — The Witness of the Early Church 35:53 — Closing Prayer ——————————————— KEY TAKEAWAYS: 1. Discipleship begins with honest humility. 2. God’s mercy changes how we treat others. 3. Biblical peace means pursuing what is broken. 4. Humility and integrity belong together. 5. Following Jesus may bring opposition. 6. Jesus fulfills the Beatitudes for us. 7. Christians never graduate from needing Jesus. 8. Humility should make Christians compassionate. 9. Christians are called to be salt and light. ——————————————— REFLECTION QUESTIONS: 1. Where am I tempted to pretend that I have things more together spiritually than I actually do? 2. What would it look like for me to honestly acknowledge my need for God’s grace right now? 3. What brokenness in my own heart or in the world around me am I tempted to ignore or distract myself from? 4. How has receiving God’s mercy changed the way I extend mercy to other people? 5. Is there someone I need to forgive, show compassion toward, or move toward instead of away from? 6. Where might God be calling me to pursue peace rather than simply avoid conflict? 7. Am I holding to biblical truth with humility, or am I using truth as a way to feel superior to others? 8. Where am I more concerned with public opinion than with faithfulness to Jesus? 9. What does being “salt and light” look like in my specific relationships, workplace, family, church, or community? 10. If someone observed my life, would they see someone who thinks they have all the answers—or someone who knows where to find help? ———
