Watching Queer Ultimatum S2: A Deep Dive & Aftercare
What was it like to watch the Ultimatum: Queer Love, Season 2 in a time of resistance to escalating wintery raids and kidnappings in Los Angeles and across Turtle Island, in times of escalating g-cide in Gaza, Congo, Sudan, bombings in Iran, and threats to queer and trans people on Turtle Island and across the globe? What does after-care look like as we process how the show impacted us? What was the arch of feelings/noticings as we moved through the episodes? How did racial dynamics, and particularly anti-Blackness and colonial expectations of coming out impact the relationships, especially given the cast was largely white or light-skinned POC? Did watching provide the fun connection to community we were hoping for? What would it look like to divest our attention from big media and invest it in small, independent media? In this episode, Carolyn Collado (they/them) and Laila Makled (they/he), discuss the significance of the Queer Ultimatum: Season Two as one of the most high-profile queer reality TV shows, and recap of some of the moments that stuck out most to them (until they got tired and had to stop, lol.). This is a long episode, so please take breaks, or enjoy over several days on your walks, drives or when you’re doing tasks! No matter who wins the election... - Ep. 7
No matter what happens on Election Day, one thing won’t change: our need for each other and community. In this episode, Host Carolyn Collado (they/them), and guest, Laila Makled (they/he) discuss preparing for Election Day in the imperial core, what it means to have choice, and grounding in our north star of building power to end racial capitalism. They acknowledge the grief that came with seeing so many who were disgusted by Joe Biden’s funding of genocide, so quickly jumped to the Kamala Harris train, and how they’re feeling now. They discuss the history of harm reduction and the war on drugs, lawful evil (Harris) vs. chaotic evil (Trump), FBI surveillance of our movements, and what it means to vote when the system itself is pro-genocide. They reflect on the hope Uncommitted Movement brings; and while people have been moved to action by the Palestinian genocide, there are many ways the depths of the horror and how they are tied to our day-to-day lives have not been internalized. With that, they offer grounding & next steps as we move forward from this moment together. Laila offers workshops, coaching, and consulting on care, communication and conflict for communities and organizations. Grieving what we lose as we try to get free - Ep. 6
When you pursue collective liberation, you will lose people, places, and things. In this episode, host Carolyn Collado (they/them) discusses their journey of loss in pursuit of collective liberation, deconditioning from systemic oppression, and reflects on collective traumas like the covid 19 pandemic and the aftermath of the lockdown as society abandoned collective care, the racial uprisings of 2020 and the abandoning of Black liberation movements once it stopped trending, witnessing genocide in Palestine, and the grief in witnessing support of Kamala Harris in the face of her direct complicity with the genocide. All of these events have led to a lot of losses in relationships with others like family, friends, and lovers, with how we navigate capitalism, and how we navigate our society, and we don't talk about the grief of these changes and losses enough. We hate it here: suicide prevention & systemic oppression
More of us can feel suicidal than we feel we can say out loud. Systems of oppression are hostile to life, and make us feel like we can’t be here. Our suicide prevention care doesn’t consider how systemic oppression like colonization, capitalism, and patriarchy impacts suicidal ideation. Mainstream suicide care currently centers institutions and police, which can be dangerous and traumatizing. This Suicide Prevention Month, we explore why our suicide care is inadequate, the systemic reasons why people feel suicidal, and talk about some harm reduction tools like mutual aid, moving our bodies, and ancestral practices to keep being here and how we can dismantle these systems to make our planet easier to live in. Systems of oppression don’t want you to feel or heal - Ep. 2
Feeling and processing the impacts of systems of oppression is a powerful form of resistance. In this episode, Carolyn Collado (they/them) explores how capitalism works to prevent us from feeling by keeping us busy and hustling. The extraction of resources through colonization and the pressure to produce have been ingrained in our lineages. Slavery and violence were used to enforce constant production. There’s 500 years of intergenerational, colonial trauma waiting to be felt and processed by us. Feeling and healing from intergenerational trauma is essential for resistance. The mental health industry often fails to address the systemic causes of anxiety and depression. Mutual aid, harm reduction, and community support are crucial for navigating the intensity of these times. Recognizing safety and finding supportive spaces is important in the healing journey.
