Rediscover the Winds is a podcast by Fremont County Museums. With museums in Dubois, Riverton, and Lander, the Fremont County Museum System is committed to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the stories of Fremont County, Wyoming and the Wind River area. The unique artifacts found at our museums relate the history of central Wyoming with information which, in many cases, can’t be found anywhere else. With the Rediscover the Winds Podcast, we hope to bring some of that history to you, wherever you are listening.
Rediscover the Winds Season 3 Episode 2: 1928 Fire at St. Stephen’s Mission
In this episode, we explore the story of the 1928 fire at St. Stephen’s Mission on the Shoshone (Wind River) Reservation. We look at the destruction the fire caused, the steps that were taken after the emergency, and the reconstruction effort that resulted in the building of a new church, gym, and dormitory. Further, we tell the story of how the church later underwent renovations that resulted in the addition of Arapaho iconography, symbols, and artistry to the interior and exterior of the church.

2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the establishment of the United States. The story of the American Fur Trade, Mountain Men, and the War of 1812 ties Wyoming and the Wind River region to the early Republic period (1789-1815) of United States history. This episode looks at the influence of Indigenous trade routes, diplomacy, and knowledge on the Rocky Mountain Fur Trade. Further, we uncover how veterans of the War of 1812 and a new generation of Americans, the “sons of the American Revolution,” influenced American westward expansion.
