Welcome to the Reflect and Protect Podcast. We’re here to explore movement, mindset, and how to thrive in a world that often feels off balance. Whether you're a student, parent, or just curious about a new path, this podcast is for you.
Are You Giving It 'Your All' - Or Just Going Through The Motions?
Are you genuinely giving things your best effort, or simply doing enough to get by?
It's easy to turn up. It's much harder to stay focused, put in the work and keep going when things get difficult.
In this episode of Reflect & Protect, we explore the difference between participation and commitment, why discipline matters more than occasional bursts of motivation, and what martial arts can teach us about effort, consistency and personal responsibility.
With lessons from Theodore Roosevelt, James Clear and psychologist Angela Duckworth, we look at why success isn't simply about talent – and why the standards we set for ourselves matter far beyond the mats.
You don't have to be the best. But are you prepared to give your best?

You Said Yes… So Why Didn't You Do It?
Ever explained something, received an enthusiastic “yes”, and then watched it be forgotten almost immediately?
From children forgetting instructions at home to adults losing track of a martial arts combination, why does this happen?
In this episode of Reflect & Protect, we explore the difference between hearing, understanding, remembering and actually doing. We look at why saying “yes” doesn't always mean information has gone in, and share simple ways to become better listeners, learners and communicators.
A practical conversation for parents, teenagers and adults – with lessons from martial arts that apply far beyond the dojang.

Should Everything Be Fun?
Should everything we do have to be fun?
We ask children all the time whether they enjoyed something, but enjoyment is only one part of a worthwhile experience. Some things are fun, some are challenging, some are satisfying, and some only feel rewarding after the difficult bit is over.
In this episode, we look at the difference between fun, engagement, effort and satisfaction, what the research says about motivation and learning, and whether we have become too quick to judge an experience by how enjoyable it felt in the moment.
We also explore what this means for children, adults and martial arts — and why “Was it fun?” might not always be the most useful question to ask.
