Originally started by Shawna Burhans and Ariel Bobbett, two young agrarians, season two is now being led by Quivira Coalition’s New Agrarian apprenticeship program. As we face the challenge of repopulating our fields and rangelands with a new generation, we’re building a community of ranchers and farmers who are working towards a thriving workforce for the future of food, agriculture, and working lands. Episode 56 - Finding Community in Agriculture: Supporting New Agrarians, the Farm, and Neighbors
In this episode, host Kristina chats with Duke Jackson, production manager at the Old Fort Farm in Hesperus, Colorado and owner of Sol Vista Farm. Duke talks about the trials and successes of starting a farm, the programs at the Old Fort Farm that support beginning agrarians, and the beauty and struggles of working a full-time job and running a veggie farm. Duke, along with three other neighboring farmers, saw a need and opportunity to support each other and founded the Grasshopper Collective. Duke explains the reasoning behind deciding to close down Sol Vista Farm this year and how the Grasshopper Collective is shifting to a new model as a seed garlic company.

Episode 55 - Wildom Farm: How value-added products and minimizing waste make a difference
In this episode, host Kristina chats with Julie Friend, owner of Wildom Farm in western Maryland. Wildom Farm uses regenerative practices in raising pasture-raised chicken, forest-raised pork, grass-fed beef and lamb, and eggs, as well as lard based moisturizer and sunscreen. Julie talks about her journey into agriculture starting with farmer’s market visits and later moving from Chicago back to family land to start a farm. We also discuss heritage breed selection, minimizing on-farm waste, value-added products, and a new research project she’s excited to start.
