S5E25 - Guidance without "power over": how to learn from someone without losing yourself
We know there’s a danger of handing our agency over to amentor, teacher, authority figure, practitioner, guide. And if you’re the one in the room holding space, nobody taught you how to avoid creating that dynamic with your clients or students either. This is a cultural problem, not a personal failing. In this episode, Jayne unpacks the three confusions - Power versus Control, Validation versus Permission, and Guidance versus Dependency - so you can learn from someone (or mentor someone) without perpetuating the exact hierarchy you came to spiritual work to escape.
BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING TO THIS EPISODE, YOU WILLDISCOVER:
● Power is not the problem - control masquerading as the guidance is. True power expands someone else's agency and doesn't require hierarchy, dominance, or certainty. When we're connected to something greater than ourself,we can be deeply powerful while allowing complete agency in others. Control, by contrast, needs us to doubt ourselves so it can maintain its position.
● Validation of direct experience is not the same as seekingexternal permission. When a teacher names what you're already perceiving (like Sarah's story of energetic bleed), they're helping you stop gaslighting yourself - not giving you permission to trust. One keeps you rooted in your owntruth - the other keeps you dependent on hierarchy and authority positioned above you.
● Healthy guidance leaves us more capable of navigatingwithout that person, not less. Genuine mentorship expands our capacity to trust yourself, offers unrestrictive frameworks so we understand what we're experiencing, and asks questions that help us find your own answers. When asystem needs us to keep coming back - always one level below “mastery”, always questioning what you sense - that's covert dependency, not guidance.
● The spiritual industry has a massive financial stake inkeeping us dependent on courses, certifications, and hierarchical levels. Once we believe we already have access to what we need to know and trust our own connection to Spirit, the entire gatekeeping structure collapses. Reclaiming ourpower means learning from someone without outsourcing our direct, unmediated spiritual connection to them.
