About Remedy & Rhyme - by Joyful Roots

Remedy & Rhyme is a space where poetry meets the power of plants. Each episode begins with a poem — a soul offering inspired by a single herb — and follows the thread of its deeper herbal wisdom. We explore what the plant stirs in the heart, the ways it invites us into greater wellness, and how we might carry its gifts into our own lives. With each unfolding episode, you'll find gentle reflections, grounded holistic practices, and simple ways to welcome herbalism into your daily rhythms. A podcast for lovers of Earth, language, and the liminal — where the sacred and the everyday meet, one plant at a time.

#21: Mugwort – Home In The Dark

Last month we talked about shining our light into the dark. This month we come at the same theme from the other side: what is it like to accept the dark, and to be at home in it? In this episode of Remedy & Rhyme, we sit with Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), the Cronewort and Dream Sage, a plant who begins in the dark soil, much like a seed. We open with the poem “Into the Dark,” then explore how Mugwort helps us stop treating our own darkness as an emergency and step into the possibility waiting there. As the veils begin to lift this autumn, we walk through Mugwort’s gifts for the body, dreams, and spirit: their bitter and pungent energetics, affinity for the womb and nervous system, and long history from moxibustion to the Charm of Nine Worts to Artemis. We also share a few ways to honor the ancestors with her as Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and Día de los Muertos approach. Note: Mugwort is not safe during pregnancy and isn’t recommended for long-term use, so please refer to safety notes in the podcast. ✨ Support the Podcast Your support is a gift that keeps this podcast running! #20: Elecampane – Be A Light

As the light turns and September asks us to start thinking ahead to winter, this episode sits with Elecampane, also known as Elfwort, a tall sun-shaped plant that has spent its whole life quietly preparing for the cold. We dig into its myth and history, from Celtic elf-lore to the legend of Helen of Troy, and explore its body gifts as a warming, pungent remedy for stagnant lungs, sluggish digestion, and stuck congestion. Along the way, we'll talk about real ways to work with the root and why now, while the inulin is at its peak, is the ideal time to harvest. But this episode is also about something bigger than one plant. Elecampane's whole strategy is to gather the light all summer, store it underground, release it when the world goes dark. This becomes a way of thinking about our own lives: what we're quietly storing this season, and how we might become a light for others once winter asks something of us. Featuring an original poem, "In the Light," this is an invitation to root down, store well, and trust that what you're keeping in reserve will be exactly what's needed when the season turns. ✨ Support the Podcast Your support is a gift that keeps this podcast running! #18: Comfrey – Knitting the Broken Places

Comfrey has an old country name that gives away exactly what it does - Knitbone. It's a plant that goes to the site of a break and starts mending it from the inside out. In this episode, that's the doorway we will step through. What does it mean to be the one in a community who knits, and how can we bring all parts of a community together to create real healing, not the kind that's imposed from outside, but the kind that's called up from within the break itself? Comfrey offers us the wisdom of strength built through weave rather than rigidity, autonomy held together with interdependence, and relationship with the parts of ourselves that we may have deemed "enemy." In this episode, we sit with an old myth, one that mirrors this same work of mending a broken world with many different, imperfect parts rather than any single fix. From there, we'll turn to the body itself, walking through what comfrey actually offers as an herbal ally, along with an honest look at what the research shows about its gifts and its real, precise limits. And we'll close, as always, with some questions to carry into your own journal. ✨ Support the Podcast Your support is a gift that keeps this podcast running!
