   unOrthodox Miseducation

It has been said that "doctors make the worst patients." Similarly, educators can make the worst students. What happens when scholars and teachers who are members of the Orthodox Church presume to teach theology without being good students of theology? How can educators embody the solution instead of perpetuating the problem? This episode is a sequel to "The Way of Orthodox Theological Education" (S2 E3).

The Way of Orthodox Theological Education

What is authentic Eastern Orthodox Christian theological education? It's not just academic religious education or doctrinal philosophical instruction. It's not primarily concerned with the rational mind or external behavior.  Orthodox theological education is primarily concerned with the heart, the spiritual intellect, and the purification of the heart through prayer and repentance. It's practical spiritual training for living the ancient Way of Christ, unchanged for thousands of years, in our 21st century world. It's learning by experience a Path that leads to profound change, healing, illumination, and transfiguration by divine power. This is the Way of Orthodox Theological Education for both children and adults.

    Wisdom Beyond Books

The story of the Wheelright in the Zhuangzi demonstrates the limitation of reading books in the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge. This ancient story also provides a place for beginning to learn both the limitation of reading and the positive use of books on the Eastern Orthodox Way, the Path that leads one toward the riches of divine knowledge and wisdom.

Ten Images for Reading Chinese Literature

In this episode, Fr. Symeon employs ten images to explain how to approach ancient Chinese literature, and other kinds of literature, from an Eastern Orthodox Christian perspective. This approach is not primarily aimed at collecting ideas or developing insights in the rational mind, but rather aimed at the purification of the heart and the healing of the soul. An Eastern Orthodox approach to Old Testament interpretation

The 2,000-year-old Orthodox Church, rooted in the East, is the most ancient Church in the world. In the West, the Holy Scripture is typically approached using an academic religious philosophical method, but academic study can only take one as far as rational and imaginitive ideas *about* God and spirituality, but not to the direct experience of God. The Orthodox Church, which received the Old Testament and both wrote and collected the New Testament texts, approaches the Bible as spiritual Scripture that invites us all into a life-changing experience of divine grace.
