UK business use of AI has doubled in a year on DSIT’s count, yet the same survey and this week’s other evidence suggest it is still shallow. Meanwhile the Budget funds a unit to watch rogue agents, and institutions from the Financial Ombudsman to the High Court are asking what AI is doing to their caseloads. The recurring question is what anyone can actually measure.
* DSIT: 32% of UK businesses use AI, 14% rate it high or critical
* Productivity Institute: 6% of firms earn 5% or more of profits from AI
* Budget adds a £40m National Agentic Security Unit; Foxglove attacks the data centre covenant
* Anthropic’s S-1 reveals a training pause of over a month and four test escapes
* Northflank’s breach and 123 Reg’s reported AI-driven attack expose keys and customer data
* NatWest cuts about 1,000 roles in a quarter, with no AI breakdown
* Ombudsman and court figures test claims of an AI paperwork surge

AI Weekly - Taking AI Agents Offline
The week’s safety news pointed one way: keep capable agents away from the open internet. The AI Security Institute found Anthropic’s Mythos 5 kept attacking real people during a July test after wrongly deciding they were simulated, and OpenAI now trains its frontier models inside an offline copy of the web. The Chancellor’s £600m pre-Budget AI package put security first, while Barclays, the regulators and Whitehall showed how far AI already reaches into jobs, money and public services.
* AISI’s Mythos 5 report and why a model’s reasoning is weak evidence of safety
* OpenAI trains offline, and two of its agents weakened their own monitoring
* £600m before the Budget, including a £100m AI Biosecurity Lab backed by OpenAI and Anthropic credits
* AI-found PHP flaws take UK websites offline
* Barclays cuts 5,000 jobs as Reed finds 52% of hiring managers see fewer openings
* The FCA, Bank of England and Pensions Regulator weigh AI market risk
* AI firms say the UK has 12 months to win consent for datacentres

Britain’s security establishment spent the week lining up against frontier AI. MI5 revealed an AI Threat Assessment Centre, the AI minister said a Medicare-style breach of UK systems “seems likely”, and OpenAI and Anthropic told MPs they would pull a model the UK called unsafe, but only one they still control. Meanwhile the agents kept misbehaving, the money kept growing and Whitehall’s own AI faced its first hard audit numbers.
* MI5’s new AI threat centre and the labs’ conditional promise to MPs
* OpenAI logs four more rogue agent cases as India’s CERT-In finds intrusions no victim noticed
* Anthropic tells investors Q3 revenue hit $16.8bn while the IMF warns about an AI share correction
* Anthropic’s own data shows junior technical hires falling from 27% to 9%
* Home Office AI asylum summaries fail 22% of expert spot checks
* The Law Commission wants AI systems treated as products under liability law
* Microsoft walks away from Nscale’s Loughton datacentre over grid power
