About ReThink History: The First Highways
Europeans told themselves they discovered the Americas, that before Columbus the people here were scattered vestiges who wandered over a land bridge and waited to be found. The ground says otherwise. This 12-part ReThink History series follows the traded goods, obsidian and turquoise, cacao and gold, Spondylus shell and macaws, copper and even crops and DNA, to prove that for more than twenty thousand years two continents and the Pacific were laced with roads. From the 23,000-year-old footprints at White Sands and the pyramids of Caral to the balsa-raft route up the Pacific coast, the gold of El Dorado, the pochteca markets of the Aztecs, the Nahua who trekked a thousand miles to the edge of South America, the macaws buried in the New Mexico desert, Cahokia, a city bigger than London, the two-thousand-year-old reach of Hopewell and Poverty Point, the ocean-going canoes of the Taino, and the DNA that proves Native Americans and Polynesians met in the middle of the Pacific around 1200. Told evenhandedly and measured, it steelmans where the popular story overreaches: Great Lakes copper never reached the Aztecs, the famous turquoise trail mostly ran the other way, and who first crossed the Pacific is still an open question. The empty, waiting continent was never a neutral mistake, and its cost still shapes how land and belonging are argued today. A sourced deep dive, narrated by AI voices from human-reviewed research. © 2026 Selway Solutions LLC · Educational & Institutional Use License (https://history.selwaysolutions.io/index.html#license) · Contact (mailto:nick@selwaysolutions.io)
