You have used a WPA project — a road, a school, an airport, a mural, even the hot-lunch line. Between 1935 and 1943 the Works Progress Administration employed 8.5 million Americans on 1.4 million projects and built the public country we still live in: 650,000 miles of roads, 78,000 bridges, 125,000 public buildings, and 800 airports — and then, deciding that out-of-work artists, writers, actors, and musicians had to eat too, it painted 200,000 works of art, wrote a guidebook to every state, recorded the last living voices of slavery, and put a free orchestra in every region of the country. It was attacked as a boondoggle from the first day, it never ended the Depression (the war did), and Congress shut it down at the height of the war boom — yet its return is so vast and so diffuse that the country is still drawing on it, and still arguing about whether it could ever build this way again.    Ninety years on, you still use the WPA every week — and the country is again fighting over whether to fund its heirs. The lasting legacy from LaGuardia to Timberline Lodge to the National School Lunch Program and Federal One's descendants — the NEA, NEH, and the nation's libraries — and the 2025-26 effort to eliminate them, Congress declining, and a court ordering the grants restored.    The country shut down its largest employer just as the war boom was working. As war industry and the draft absorbed the unemployed, FDR's December 1942 letter gave the WPA an 'honorable discharge.'    The Hot Lunch: How the WPA Became America's First Safety Net

   By hiring cooks, nurses, teachers, and librarians off the relief rolls, a jobs program quietly became the closest thing the country had to a national social-welfare agency — and served roughly half a billion hot school lunches, the ancestor of today's National School Lunch Program, alongside nursery schools, public-health nursing, literacy classes, and bookmobiles.

   The WPA hired 10,000 out-of-work writers to hold a mirror up to America: a literary guidebook to every state, and more than 2,300 first-person interviews with formerly enslaved people, recorded on the edge of being lost. Handled honestly — driven by John Lomax, compiled by Benjamin Botkin, shaped by who did the interviewing — and the careers it launched: Ellison, Wright, Hurston.

   The government once paid artists to eat — and accidentally launched American modern art. From the PWAP that painted San Francisco's Coit Tower murals to Holger Cahill's Federal Art Project, nearly 200,000 works, and young unknowns Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.
