Retro Blood 256: The Exorcist III (1990) 😈🩸🔪

oin James Kline and J.H. Alison as Retro Blood continues our September–October Halloween Spooky Season with the third installment in The Exorcist franchise! We're diving into a sequel that takes a different approach to supernatural horror, trading the traditional possession story for a chilling psychological mystery filled with brutal murders, disturbing imagery, and demonic terror. Written and directed by William Peter Blatty, the author of the original The Exorcist, this 1990 horror film was adapted from his novel Legion. Starring George C. Scott, Brad Dourif, Ed Flanders, and Jason Miller, the movie follows Lieutenant William Kinderman as he investigates a series of gruesome murders that appear connected to the infamous Gemini Killer—even though the killer was executed years earlier. We dig into the fascinating production history, including Blatty's original vision for Legion, his desire to create a true follow-up to the first film, and the studio's decision to push the movie further into The Exorcist franchise. We discuss the extensive reshoots, the additional exorcism sequence, and how studio demands changed Blatty's original ending. These changes transformed the film into a very different experience from the one he initially intended. We also explore the incredible performances, especially Brad Dourif's disturbing portrayal of the Gemini Killer, George C. Scott's intense detective work, and Jason Miller's return to the franchise as Father Damien Karras. From the unsettling hospital scenes to the infamous hallway jump scare, The Exorcist III delivers some of the most memorable moments in 1990s horror. We're breaking down the story, the murders, the supernatural mystery, the atmosphere, the practical effects, the production struggles, and everything that makes this sequel such a fascinating entry in the franchise. Get ready for a full movie breakdown and review as we discuss the good, the bad, and the downright terrifying! Does The Exorcist III stand alongside the original, or does it get lost in the shadow of its legendary predecessor? The investigation begins. The evil returns. Retro Blood 255: Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977)

Join James Kline and J.H. Alison as Retro Blood continues our September–October Halloween Spooky Season with the bizarre, ambitious, and infamous sequel to one of the greatest horror movies ever made! We're diving into Exorcist II: The Heretic, a film that took the terrifying world of The Exorcist and sent it in a completely unexpected direction. Directed by John Boorman, this 1977 sequel brings back Linda Blair as Regan MacNeil, alongside Richard Burton, Louise Fletcher, and Max von Sydow. This time, Father Philip Lamont investigates the mysterious death of Father Merrin while uncovering the continuing influence of the demon Pazuzu and the strange powers connected to Regan's possession. We explore the fascinating—and troubled—history behind the production, including why the original director William Friedkin and writer William Peter Blatty didn't return, the ambitious ideas behind Boorman's vision, and the constant script rewrites and production problems that plagued the film. We also discuss the illnesses, complicated special effects, and locust-filled sequences that made this production as strange behind the scenes as it is on screen. Why did this sequel abandon much of the original's grounded terror for hypnotism, psychic connections, locusts, and metaphysical ideas? How did audiences react to it? And has Exorcist II earned a second look as an unusual piece of 1970s horror cinema? We're covering the story, the performances, the weird moments, the production history, and everything that makes this sequel so divisive. Get ready for a full movie breakdown and review, as we discuss the good, the bad, and the downright bizarre! The demon isn't finished yet—and neither are we!
