About RHYTHMS OF REST℠ Leadership Podcast
Kent Murawski is an executive coach, author, and speaker who helps business owners, executives, and leaders to grow their companies without it costing them their health, their families, or themselves. He is the creator of the RHYTHMS OF REST℠ framework, newsletter, and leadership podcast. Like a heart where all four chambers must work together for proper blood flow, your life depends on four key rhythms working in harmony: Relational, Emotional, Spiritual (faith or a philosophy of life), and Tangible. His own breakdown at 27, and another near miss at 39, built the framework years before he taught it to anyone else. Kent has led or founded three organizations, written two books, and spoken on four continents. His third book, built around the same four rhythms, is forthcoming in early 2027. Episode 15: The friends you need before you need them (Why Every Leader Needs Two Close Friends)
Leaders have plenty of people around them and very few they can say the hard stuff to. When something goes sideways, it all lands at home, and your family ends up getting the scraps of you. In this episode, I share the hardest two weeks of my life as a parent, the two friends who showed up almost daily, and why the friends who carry you through your worst week have to be built before that week shows up. Content note: This episode includes a brief, non-graphic mention of my daughter's past suicidality. If you or someone you love is struggling, call or text 988 (US): https://988lifeline.org (https://988lifeline.org) What you'll learn Name the two people you would call if something went sideways this week, and why two is enough Stop asking one person, even a great spouse, to carry the full weight of your emotional needs Tell real friends from deal friends, and why leaders end up with plenty of the second kind Gain an edge few others will have as more people try to fill the friendship gap with AI Send the one text that starts rebuilding your inner circle in the next 24 hours Key quote from the episode "Most leaders think that they need more people around them, but actually what they need most is people who will love them for who they are and not what they've accomplished, and people that aren't impressed by them." Episode highlights The two-week stretch after my daughter's second hospitalization, and the two closest friends who reached out almost daily for weeks. Why those friends showed up: the friendship was already there before I ever sent that text. Why friendship disappears first for leaders, even in groups where it could form. Arthur Brooks on real friends vs. deal friends, and why leaders get seen as dispensers of power, information, and money. The friendship edge: because friends want nothing from you, they can be frank with you. Episode #14: It Wasn’t the Hours: What Actually Breaks High Performing Leaders
If you've tried everything the wellness and balance menu has to offer and ended up right back where you started, I know what it feels like. I lived in that loop for more than 12 years, trading home for work and work for home, until I learned that effort was never what I was missing. This is the origin story of the RHYTHMS OF REST℠ framework and the shift that finally got me out. What you'll learn Why you can't dig your way out of a hole by working harder, and what to point your discipline at instead How letting go of the illusion of control over every outcome breaks the burnout loop (without letting go of responsibility) The four rhythms (Relational, Emotional, Spiritual, Tangible) and why they work in harmony, not equality Why better scheduling won't fix a rhythm problem How to find which rhythm needs your attention most, in under three minutes Key quote from the episode "Most people think burnout is a workload problem, but it's actually a control problem, and even more precisely a rhythm problem." Kent Murawski Episode highlights A garden hose, a bridge, and the grip I trusted for the first half of my life The kitchen floor at 27, and the twelve mediocre years that followed The epiphany at 39: you don't have to understand or control everything to live from a place of peace and rest What living in rhythm changed: a marriage from a 5 to an 8, 15 pounds lost, a weekly day of rest The rule of life, an ancient structure tested by everyone from high-ranking government officials to monks Take the RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT The RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT will tell you which of your four rhythms is breaking down and give you one move to make this week. Episode 13: Why Working Less Made These Two Business Owners Grow Faster
Every time Jesh thought about taking Friday off, his chest would tighten. He was afraid one day off would cost him revenue, the same assumption almost every business owner runs on. Two business owners tested that assumption as a reversible experiment instead of a permanent change, and neither one lost a dollar. What you'll learn Why cutting a day from your work week can increase revenue instead of costing you How to test a belief instead of defending it, using a reversible experiment Why the Emotional rhythm, not the number of hours worked, is usually the real problem What the 80/20 principle reveals about which hours are actually producing your results A 24-48 hour action step for building margin without redesigning your business Key quote from the episode "Most people think this is about revenue. It's actually about whether you're willing to challenge a belief you've never questioned." Episode highlights Jesh took Fridays off as a "summer experiment," and within two months his revenue was up 20 percent He hit his yearly revenue goal six months early, and a year later he still takes Fridays off James, who owns a trucking and land development company in Florida, made the same trade during a revenue downturn and landed a major new job within months Parkinson's Law explains why the work that felt urgent simply stopped needing to happen Kent shares what happened the few months he abandoned his own Friday rhythm, and what it cost him Take the RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT The RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT will tell you which of your four rhythms is breaking down and give you one move to make this week. Episode 12: Leadership Burnout Isn't a Self-Awareness Problem (Most Leaders Already Have That)
I used to believe that saying "I'm burned out" was most of the work. It's not — it's the starting line. In this episode, I trace my own breakdown at 27 and a near-repeat at 39 to show why insight alone never held, and what finally did: rhythms built to flex instead of a routine built to resist. What You'll Learn Why naming your burnout out loud hasn't moved the needle — and what actually will Which of your four rhythms (Relational, Emotional, Spiritual, Tangible) is quietly running you into the ground Why the vulnerability you've already mastered is the opening move, not the win What shifted for one CTO's entire team once his own rhythm changed Why fixing your own rhythms carries more weight than you think, even if you don't run the whole organization Key Quote from the Episode "Burnout isn't a feelings problem you talk your way out of. It's a structural problem you build your way out of." Episode Highlights I trace my burnout at 27 and a near-miss at 39 to show why insight alone didn't protect me the second time The skyscraper metaphor: rhythms built to flex hold weight that rigid ones can't New Vistage data shows CEO burnout climbing to 70% occasional, 28% frequent or daily Cliff's story: how one CTO's entire team shifted once his relational rhythm did Why "fix your own rhythms first" isn't a small answer — it's the leverage point (Maxwell's Law of the Lid) Take the RHYTHMS OF REST Assessment The RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT will tell you which of your four rhythms is breaking down and give you one move to make this week. If You Feel Like You're Winning at Work and Losing at Home… This Episode Is for You
Burnout isn't new for high-capacity leaders — it's been quietly wrecking us for years, and it just keeps finding a new decade to show up in. In this episode, I get honest about the second time it nearly took me down, right as I was heading into my 40s, and the one shift in posture — not a system, not a hack — that finally broke the cycle. If your calendar is full but you're still running on fumes, this one's for you. What You'll Learn: Why the fix for burnout was never "try harder" — and what actually broke the cycle for me How to tell the difference between releasing control and abdicating responsibility Why your brain may be getting sharper, not slower, past 40 — and what to do with that Why one of my coaching clients scaled her company the same season she cut her work nights in half The one question to ask yourself the next time anxiety starts building "Work is a priority. It is not the priority." Episode Highlights: The CEO story that proves burnout isn't a new problem — it's an old one leaders are finally naming out loud The ordinary Wednesday afternoon that changed how I think about rest for good Why the "illusion of control" might be running your calendar right now What the research on fluid vs. crystallized intelligence means for leaders past 40 Valeria's story: fewer work nights, more revenue — not less The RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT will tell you which of your four rhythms is breaking down and give you one move to make this week. Episode 10: Balance Won't Fix Your Burnout (These Four Rhythms Will)
I had two breakdowns twelve years apart — the second one while I was doing everything the wellness industry told me to do. In this episode, I break down why six trillion dollars in global wellness spending hasn't moved the burnout numbers in over a decade, and I introduce the four-chamber framework, Rhythms of Rest, that finally did. What you'll learn Why "balance" is a physics metaphor that was never built for a human life, and the perspective that actually works instead The four rhythms behind sustainable leadership: Relational, Emotional, Spiritual, and Tangible How to name the one rhythm quietly driving your burnout, without a twelve-step audit The "keystone rhythm," borrowed from the psychology of keystone habits, and how to pick yours this week Why "self-care" language keeps you stuck, and the words that actually hold Key quote from the episode "Most people think they're burned out from too much work. They're actually burned out from the wrong rhythms." Episode highlights I relive the morning I ended up face down on my kitchen floor at twenty-seven, and the second breakdown at thirty-nine that scared me more Why six trillion dollars in global wellness spending hasn't made a dent in executive burnout The Rhythms of Rest framework, explained through the four chambers of a heartbeat Brandon's story: a founder who cut his hours from 12–15 a day, seven days a week, to 2–4 hours a day, six days a week — a seventy percent drop The ancient story of Daniel in Babylon, and what a ten-day trial period proves about keeping your own rhythm inside someone else's system Take the Rhythms of Rest assessment The RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT will tell you which of your four rhythms is breaking down and give you one move to make this week. Season 2 Teaser: 3 Arguments I'm About to Make That the Wellness Industry Never Will
The wellness industry made six trillion dollars last year telling you how to fix your burnout. And burnout among leaders like you hasn't gone down — it's climbing. This trailer opens three weeks of arguments that industry would rather you never heard, starting with the one hiding in plain sight. What You'll Learn The specific dollar figure behind the wellness industry, and why it matters that burnout keeps climbing despite it Why "I did everything right" is often the exact sentence right before someone burns out a second time The reason behind the three-week schedule break, and why it's happening now instead of later A free way to see, in under three minutes, exactly which of your four rhythms needs attention first Key Quote "Most of us think we're burned out from too much work. We're actually burned out from the wrong rhythms." Episode Highlights The real distinction this season draws between too much work and the wrong rhythms, and why the difference changes everything Three previews land over the next three weeks: doing everything "right" and still breaking, the grind that built a career becoming the grind ending it, and why performing vulnerability isn't the same as real change Why this trailer breaks the usual every-other-week rhythm, and what that says about how seriously this argument is meant to be taken A direct prompt to notice which of the three previews lands hardest — that's the one to listen to first Take the RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT The RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT will tell you which of your four rhythms is breaking down and give you one move to make this week. Episode 9: You're Not Burned Out From Too Much Work (You're Burned Out From the Wrong Rhythm)
You've tried the menu. Exercise. Meditation. The morning routine. More time off. And somehow you keep ending up back on the same floor. This episode is about why — and what the last twenty years finally taught Kent that no one in the wellness industry has been willing to say out loud. What You'll Learn: Why "balance" is a borrowed physics metaphor that has never described how a human life actually works How to identify which of the four rhythms — Relational, Emotional, Spiritual, or Tangible — is dragging the other three down right now The one keystone change that moves everything else downstream (without a five-pillar overhaul) Why most burnout isn't caused by too much work — and what it's actually caused by Why calling it "self-care" keeps you stuck inside the frame that already failed you Key Quote: "Most people think they're burned out from too much work. They're actually burned out from the wrong rhythm." Episode Highlights: Kent's nervous breakdown at 27 — face down on the kitchen floor, supposed to be heading to a leadership conference, no idea why it was happening The trillion-dollar wellness industry data point that lands like a gut punch: more investment, more burnout The "close your eyes" exercise that exposes exactly why balance will never work The story of a business owner who went from 12–15 hour days to 1–2 hours — without sacrificing results Daniel in Babylon: a 2,500-year-old case study in keeping your own rhythms under pressure Take the RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT The RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT will tell you which of your four rhythms is breaking down and give you one move to make this week. Episode 8: If You Feel Like Slowing Down Means Falling Behind… This Will Change Your Mind
The Rhythms of REST guy is officially fried. And he's recording this episode anyway — because what's happening to him right now is probably happening to you, too. This episode is about what burnout, a bedroom floor in Cambridge, and one business owner's Friday experiment taught Kent about slowing down without losing what matters. What You'll Learn Why slowing down in summer actually increases momentum instead of killing it How to identify the three places in your calendar where you're scheduled against the season What the Spiritual and Tangible rhythms have to do with why you can't let go of control The three R's for summer — Rethink, Re-evaluate, Ruthlessly Eliminate — and how to use them practically Why rest is preparation, not quitting (and the Roger Bannister story that proves it) Key Quote from the Episode "You don't have to understand or control everything to live and lead from a place of rest." Episode Highlights Kent shares the real-time signs he was heading toward burnout — and why by the time you feel it, you're already further along than you think Tim Ferriss removed himself from the bottleneck and profits went up 40% — Kent breaks down why this matters for how you approach summer The Wednesday afternoon in 2014 that rewired how Kent thinks about control, outcomes, and rest Coaching client Jesh took Fridays off all summer — and hit his annual revenue goal six months early Your Rhythms Check: one calendar adjustment in the next 24-48 hours that costs less than you think Take the RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT The RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT will tell you which of your four rhythms is breaking down and give you one move to make this week. Episode 7: Why I Refuse to Let AI Write My Newsletter — Even When I'm Drowning
You have rules about AI. What nobody warned you about is that the hardest part isn't enforcing them with the tool — it's enforcing them with yourself. This episode is about the temptation to hand AI the things that were never supposed to leave your hands, and what it quietly costs you when you do. Episode 6: Why You Feel Exhausted After a "Day Off" (And What Actually Replenishes You)
Ever finish a "day off" more drained than when you started? Most driven leaders confuse rest with inactivity — and it leaves them more depleted, not less. In this episode, I unpack why "doing nothing" backfires for high-capacity leaders and what actually replenishes you. What You'll Learn: • Why your "day off" leaves you more tired — and what actually refills you • How to identify the keystone rhythms inside your Emotional and Spiritual life • A Heschel-inspired test to design rest that actually works • The hidden cost of letting fear and anxiety drive your day off • How to protect a weekly rhythm of rest without losing momentum Key Quote: "Rest is active replenishment. It's doing the opposite of the thing that drains you all week." Episode Highlights: • I break my own rule and open the laptop out of fear — then catch myself • Why propagating plants quieted my mind when strategy couldn't • The Heschel principle that reframes Sabbath for modern leaders: if you work with your mind, rest with your hands • Where Emotional rhythms (fun and hobbies) and Spiritual rhythms (a weekly day of rest) intersect • A 24–48 hour action step to schedule one replenishing activity this week • The reflection question every driven leader needs to sit with: What are you avoiding by staying productive? Episode 5: What to Do When You're Doing Everything Right and Still Drowning
You're doing everything right — and still feel like you're underwater. In this deeply personal episode, Kent opens up about his own season of sadness, anger, and overwhelm, and shares the three anchors that held him steady when his usual strategies stopped working. What You'll Learn: How to keep moving forward when your go-to rhythms aren't cutting it Why your anchor routines matter most on the days you feel like skipping them How treating your emotions like people — not problems — unlocks what they're actually trying to tell you The 90-second rule that changes how you handle emotional overwhelm When "pushing through" is the answer — and when it's making things worse Key Quote from the Episode: "Sometimes the most spiritual, most productive, most courageous thing you can do is the next boring thing in front of you." Episode Highlights: Kent's raw confession about feeling sad, angry, and overwhelmed — and what happened the Wednesday it all hit The "chop wood, carry water" principle: why transformation hides in the mundane How Kent's patella tendon rupture stripped away nearly every rhythm — and which one carried him through Why seasons have a beginning and an end, and if yours doesn't, it's not a season — it's a lifestyle The difference between letting emotions rule you and letting them speak to you Take the RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT. Episode 4: Looking Strong Won’t Make People Follow You (But Doing This Will)
A room full of entrepreneurs watched Kent cry. And it turned out to be one of the most important leadership moments of his life. In this episode, Kent shares the raw story of what broke open in him during a mastermind Q&A in Austinwith Ryan Levesque — and why your vulnerability, not your wins, is the most powerful leadership tool you're not fully using. What You'll Learn Why driven leaders stay successful on the outside but invisible on the inside — and how to close that gap The difference between transparency and true vulnerability (most leaders confuse the two) How to share vulnerably as a leader without undermining confidence or oversharing Why your emotional and relational rhythms determine whether people follow your title — or actually follow you A simple 24–48 hour action step to practice real vulnerability this week Key Quote from the Episode "It's your vulnerability, your humility, and your weakness — that's going to speak to the people you lead." Episode Highlights Kent gets emotional in front of 15 entrepreneurs and unpacks exactly why — it's not what you'd expect Ryan Levesque's table exercise: what your 4-year-old self would shout — and what it reveals about your ambition The "scars not wounds" principle — how to know what's appropriate to share and when Why Kent's heart grew callous over years of leadership and how one moment cracked it back open The cost of leading without vulnerability: shallow relationships, transactional teams, and a life spent performing Take the RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT Discover where you are on the burnout scale — from thriving to critical. Episode 3: You Have a Plan for Everything—Except Your Life
You have a business plan, a financial plan, a marketing plan — but do you have a plan for your actual life? In this episode, Kent unpacks why the beliefs running beneath your behavior may be the real reason you feel stuck — and how to replace them without starting over. What You'll Learn: How to identify the faulty belief driving your hustle-and-grind cycle The doom loop: why anxiety reinforces the very patterns you're trying to escape How to use neuroplasticity to rewire limiting beliefs into ones you actually believe Why defining your "enough number" stops the endless striving How pain becomes the foundation for purpose — not just suffering Key Quote: "If you want to change what you do, you have to change your belief." Episode Highlights: James, a 28-year-old business owner, kept skipping his personal values to work on company values — revealing a toxic belief underneath The difference between hustle as a tactic and hustle as a lifestyle (and why one will destroy you) Viktor Frankl's three sources of purpose and how Kent's breakdown at 27 became the doorway to the Rhythms of REST framework Shalom isn't just peace — it means wholeness, and wholeness is a direction, not a destination The four rhythms (Relational, Emotional, Spiritual, Tangible) and why all four chambers have to beat together Take the RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT Discover where you are on the burnout scale — from thriving to critical. It's an idea graveyard." Episode Highlights Why "measurable results" is the only productivity definition worth keeping—and the follow-up question most leaders never ask The neuroscience of the default mode network: why walking, showering, and low-demand tasks unlock your most creative breakthroughs How Friedrich Nietzsche walked 8 hours a day through the Swiss Alps and produced his most influential work in a single decade Kent's full weekly schedule—blocked by day and by hour—for sustainable creative output and actual momentum The 4-step team prescription for strengths-based leadership that builds loyalty and drives real results Take the RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT Discover where you are on the burnout scale — from thriving to critical. Episode 1: You've Been Resting Wrong — And It's Why You're Still Burned Out
You've been told to rest. You've tried. And somehow, you're still exhausted. That's not a discipline problem — it's a definition problem. In this episode, Kent Murawski dismantles the most pervasive myth about rest and replaces it with a framework that actually works for leaders wired to move. What You'll Learn Why "just rest" is the worst advice you can give a driven leader The ancient Hebrew definition of rest that reframes everything How one founder reduced his work hours by nearly 400% with a single weekly practice Why one type of rest can't fix all four types of depletion How to identify which rhythm needs your attention most right now Key Quote "Depletion doesn't get fixed by doing nothing. It gets fixed by doing things that replenish you." Episode Highlights Rest is active, not passive — it's doing what replenishes you, not what drains you The Hebrew word shâbath (root of "Sabbath") means to cease, stop, and celebrate — a radically different frame After a painful leadership conflict, Kent retreated to his garage and refinished furniture for months — working with his hands was what healed emotional depletion Brandon went from 12–15 hrs/day, 7 days/week to 2–4 hrs/day, 6 days/week after one consistent day of rest Relational, Emotional, Spiritual, and Tangible depletion each require a completely different kind of restoration Take the RHYTHMS OF REST ASSESSMENT Discover where you are on the burnout scale — from thriving to critical. Episode 0: You Don't Need Balance. You Need This.
You've been sold a lie. Work-life balance doesn't work — not for driven leaders whose calendars are color-coded and still overflowing. Not for someone crushing it professionally while running on fumes personally. What if the problem isn't how hard you're working, but the framework you've been handed? This intro episode is where it all begins. I'm Kent Murawski, and at 27 I had a fall-down-on-the-floor nervous breakdown. I spent the next 20 years figuring out what actually works — not tips and tricks, but real rhythms. The kind that build sustainable success without costing you your soul. What You'll Hear in This Episode Why work-life balance is the villain — and what rhythm actually looks like The four rhythms every driven leader needs: Relational, Emotional, Spiritual, and Tangible What becomes possible when all four are working together: harmony at home, mental clarity, physical energy, and meaningful work A preview of Brandon's story — from 12-15 hour days, seven days a week, to 2-4 focused hours daily. All from one simple rhythm. Your first RHYTHMS Check: one action you can take in the next 24-48 hours Your First RHYTHMS Check Sit with this question: If you had to cut your work hours in half tomorrow, what would you stop doing first?
