Ep. 79 - The Goal Isn't to Win the Fight (with Misti)
Life is not Disney. And Misti doesn't teach the "if he grabs you like this, say STOP" version of self-defense.
Misti is a journeyman instructor in Libre Knife Fighting, a youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach, and runs a mixed martial arts self-defense class in Pittsburgh. She's also training to become a hospice volunteer and, eventually, a death doula. Yes, the same woman. We contain multitudes.
We get into:
- The #1 self-defense myth: "I'll just run away"
- Why the goal isn't to WIN the fight. It's to get OUT
- The exit signs she put on the mat walls, and the student who walked right into the "basement"
- Why you don't get taken to a second location
- No ego: swallow your pride 10 million times if it means you go home
- Hammer fists, a Sharpie, and why a flashlight might be the best tool you own
- Training in the snow, in the dark, with the wrong gloves (and learning from it)
- Her mother's death, the nurse who didn't notice, and why laughter heals grief
- What a "good death" actually means
- Memento mori: being prepared without living in your own prison
"If you're not putting in physical reps, you're just playing pretend."

Ep. 78 - Your "North Star" is a very spiritual way of saying you're scared.
"I don't know what my North Star is."
A client said this to me in group coaching, and I want to talk about it, because in the West, purpose has become the most socially acceptable excuse to not fucking move.
Where I'm from, purpose isn't bestowed on you by the gods, the fairies, the ancestors. Purpose happens AFTER you move.
But most people are waiting for their higher calling to show up so they'll be absolved of the sting of rejection, the cringe of learning a new skill, the crickets after they put themselves out there. And as long as it feels hard, they tell themselves they're "not aligned."
Wrong.
In this episode:
- Why waiting for your purpose is fear wearing a spiritual costume
- Clarity comes from movement, even 10 million wrong moves
- If you feel ready, clear, and confident, you're already late
- Driver of your life vs. passenger in a bumper car
- Why I don't do New Year's resolutions: how you END the year is how you start the next one
I have a few private coaching spots left to close out 2026. If you need a sign, this is it. DM me on any platform.
Rate the show 5 stars, share it with someone who needs a call-out, and I'll see you in the next episode.
