Welcome to The Photog Files — where we explore photography, creativity, and everything in between. I’m Rick Nelson, a photographer based in Brisbane, Australia. Whether you’re just starting out or already a pro, this podcast is about growing your craft, finding inspiration, and sharing the passion for capturing life through the lens.
When did taking pictures turn into so many decisions?
In this episode of The Photog Files, Rick Nelson reflects on the gear reviews, editing subscriptions, AI tools and conflicting advice that can leave photographers feeling overloaded—and asks how much of it actually helps us make photographs.
From the freedom of carrying a small camera to knowing when to stop editing, this is a reminder to leave room for curiosity, imperfect pictures and the experience of being there.
Plus, a simple 20-minute photography challenge to help you reconnect with what catches your eye.
Pick a camera. Pick something to notice. See what you find.

Stop Asking “Is This Photo Good?”
Is “I love it” useful feedback? And does “crop it tighter” mean you should?
The Photog Files is back. Join Rick Nelson for a practical look at getting better photography feedback—and deciding what to do with it.
In this episode:
• Two October exhibitions exploring photography, community and how we look at images.
• Three questions that reveal what someone actually sees in your photograph.
• A simple exercise for testing advice without losing your original intention.
• The difference between a requirement, a reading and a personal preference.
This week’s challenge: choose one photograph, write down what you wanted it to communicate, ask a viewer for their response, then test one change beside the original.
What’s one piece of photography advice you chose not to follow—and what did keeping your original choice preserve?

You’re Already Standing Among the Greats
In this deeply personal episode of The Photog Files, Rick Nelson explores the quiet feeling so many photographers carry: the fear that they don’t truly belong among the “greats.”
After a conversation with a friend whose work was displayed beside world-traveling documentary photographers and celebrated visual storytellers, Rick dives into the myth of photographic greatness — and why legendary status has far less to do with miles traveled, dramatic biographies, or public recognition than we’ve been led to believe.
Through reflections on photographers like Vivian Maier, Saul Leiter, Fan Ho, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and others, this episode becomes a reminder that meaningful photography is not measured by passport stamps or prestige… but by honesty, attention, emotion, and the ability to truly see the world.
If you’ve ever felt behind, ordinary, unseen, or undeserving of your place in photography, this episode is for you.
Because maybe greatness was never about becoming larger than life.
Maybe it was simply about learning to see life deeply enough that others can feel it too.
