Transferring Money From the Liquidated to the Patient Investor
Warren Buffett has a famous line that “the stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient.” On a day like yesterday, under all the forced selling and liquidation, I would tweak it slightly, because the market was busy transferring money from the liquidated to the patient. When I see a whoosh down like that, I squeeze my nose and buy the Nasdaq 100. I would rather not try to guess which tech or chip stock survives, so I buy the QQQ. This hands you the top 5 to 10 best-run companies in the world at a 10 to 15 percent discount. This was the fourth time I bought the QQQ into weakness this year, after June, July, and late October, and I added in tranches all the way down on Thursday. I had already raised cash during the last 2 months, for this exact purpose, to buy the QQQ when something like this occurred. My plan was perfectly executed, and timing got lucky. My Thoughts on Palantir and Apple Earnings
The Nasdaq 100 is officially in a ten percent correction, the semiconductor index is down to a sixteen times forward multiple, and I keep telling you that is when a long-term investor should be nibbling rather than hiding (not financial advice, see disclosure below). So I have been adding to the Nasdaq 100 and semis into the weakness. Against that backdrop, two of my top holdings reported, Apple and Palantir, both sold off, and I believe both remain a hold for now. Apple had a decent quarter, with a nice revenue beat, record services, and a strong Mac number, but the stock dropped around four percent on a soft margin guide tied to memory costs and a December outlook that just is not exciting for a company trading at forty times earnings. My bigger issue is how dismissive they sound about integrating real AI and fixing Siri, especially in a world moving toward personalized bots that could transact right through the iPhone. For me Apple always stays a hold. Palantir is the opposite kind of story, growing revenue 96% with US commercial up a ridiculous 148 percent and a rule of forty near 158, yet the stock still fell because people went fishing for a reason that seems more like speculation to me. I trimmed it earlier near $200 per share when it got too large in my portfolio, but I am still a big fan of the business. I also read the Shyam Sankar quote from the earnings call on reindustrializing America, which is the exact reshoring theme that inspired the Rigatoni Capital portfolio. The Energy Bottleneck Behind the AI Data Center Boom | Clinton Smith
I had Clinton Smith of Dawn Run Intelligence back on the pod, and we got into the bottleneck of energy when it comes to the AI infrastructure buildout. Clinton has spent twenty-five years in energy and infrastructure, and he’s building behind-the-meter co-gen plants that let data centers make their own power on site. Clinton has a boots-on-the-ground view rather than a financial analysis from a high-rise on Wall Street. Clinton also walks through his Dawn Run Intel system, the AI-driven macro scan he has been refining since early 2023 that once pointed him to Nvidia, and why he is watching credit spreads for any sign the AI CapEx boom is dislocating from reality. One thing to remember is that AI infrastructure, as controversial as it is, must be built to enable the autonomous systems that could one day even cure diseases like cancer. There is a cost to building a powerful technology, and Clinton and his team at OHR Energy are doing something that I would argue is almost bigger than just the hyperscalers’ return on capital. This is about finding solutions for running autonomous AI so we can discover unimaginable breakthroughs for society.
