I Thought Closing My Business Meant I'd Failed

For Lee Midlane, closing her business IT Central after more than 11 years was something she never imagined she'd have to do. Having invested so much time, energy and money into making it work, she initially struggled with the shame of feeling that she'd failed. In this episode, Lee shares what it was like to reach the point where she had to let go, while also dealing with her husband's traumatic brain injury just five months earlier. She opens up about the challenges of juggling family life, caring for her husband and running two businesses, the emotional impact of closing IT Central, and how finding the right business community helped her see new possibilities. Her story is a reminder that closing a business doesn't mean you've failed, that sometimes letting go is the best decision you can make, and that there can be life, opportunity and freedom on the other side. Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play. About Lee Lee Midlane is the co-founder of Box Brand, a Scottish business creating thoughtful branded experiences that help organisations build lasting relationships. A former teacher and qualified trainer, Lee brings curiosity, empathy and a practical approach to every project. Her entrepreneurial journey has included building a business, making difficult decisions and discovering that closing a chapter is not the same as failing. She believes business owners often carry responsibilities that others cannot see, and that walking away after giving something everything you have can be an act of wisdom rather than defeat. Today, Lee works with businesses to move beyond disposable promotional merchandise and create gifts and experiences that people genuinely value. She is active in Circle Networks and passionate about the power of connection, honest conversations and supportive communities. Her message is simple: success is not always about holding on; sometimes it begins when you let go. I Didn’t Know How to Explain What Was Going On

From the outside, Elliot Kay had a lot to be grateful for. He had a successful business an amazing family and on paper, life looked good. Yet inside, he was struggling with depression, constantly feeling that he wasn’t good enough. In this episode, Elliot shares what it was like to struggle with his mental health while finding it difficult to understand, let alone explain, what he was experiencing. He opens up about reaching a point where he had thoughts of suicide, the moment he realised he needed help, and how talking to someone helped him begin to see things differently. His story is a reminder that you don't have to wait until you reach breaking point to ask for help, and that struggling doesn't mean you've failed. Sometimes, the hardest part is admitting that something isn't right and finding the words to tell someone. In this episode, we talk about: - What depression can look like when, from the outside, everything seems to be going well. - The pressure of feeling that you're never doing enough or achieving enough. - How difficult it can be to explain what you're experiencing, even to the people closest to you. - The importance of asking for help and recognising when you need support. - Letting go of other people's expectations and finding your own sense of purpose. - Learning to accept where you are and recognising that you don't have to have everything figured out. If you've ever felt that you should be happier, more successful or further ahead than you are, Elliot's story may help you recognise that you're not alone. Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play. About Elliot Elliot Kay is a keynote speaker, entrepreneur, seven-time author and speaker coach who believes we don’t always need clarity before we act — sometimes clarity is something we create through action. Over more than two decades in business, Elliot has built companies, experienced failure and bankruptcy, reinvented himself and learned what it means to keep moving when the outcome isn’t guaranteed. Despite being dyslexic, he has become a seven-time author and experienced keynote speaker, helping entrepreneurs, leaders and professional speakers communicate powerfully, grow their businesses and step onto bigger stages. His Watch Me Go philosophy explores what happens when we stop waiting to feel ready and instead take intelligent action, create evidence and discover what we’re capable of. Warm, funny and refreshingly open about success and failure, Elliot speaks about entrepreneurship, confidence, identity, influence and taking action without certainty. I Was Told What My Future Would Look Like. I Decided Otherwise.

What do you do when you’ve spent years being told what is going to happen to your body, your health and your future? In this episode, I’m joined by Sue Woodriffe who has spent much of her life dealing with pain, injury, trauma and some pretty frightening predictions about what her future might look like. At just 12 years old, Sue injured her knee in a trampoline accident. What followed was years of operations, chronic pain and decisions being made for her. At one point, she was even told she could be in a wheelchair by the age of 40. Sue talks openly about how those experiences affected her, from feeling that she had no choice and no voice, to becoming fiercely determined to maintain her independence and mobility. Sue shares what she has learned about trauma, resilience, taking responsibility for your wellbeing and why she believes that, whatever happens to you, you can still have a good life. Because sometimes the biggest thing you can find after everything you’ve been through is your voice. And with your voice comes a choice. Now, grab a cuppa, relax and press play. About Sue At the age of 12, a serious accident set in motion a succession of traumatic experiences, culminating in the death of her mother when she was 25. The accident and its aftermath resulted in a lifelong physical disability, introducing Sue to challenges that many people spend a lifetime trying to avoid, including pain, loss, uncertainty and the need to adapt to circumstances beyond her control. Later experiences of grief, chronic pain and significant life transitions deepened her understanding of how trauma can affect both mind and body. Alongside these challenges, Sue has built a full and rewarding life. She married, raised two wonderful sons, ran a successful business with her husband for many years and now enjoys being grandmother to two grandsons. These experiences inspired Sue to support others who are struggling in life, particularly when trauma underlies the emotions and beliefs that shape their lives.
