Risk Raiders

About Risk Raiders

Risk Raiders is a comedic hangout podcast hosted by two Red Raiders, Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte, who took two different paths out of Lubbock. We didn't overlap at Texas Tech — we met a few years after graduation and have been friends ever since. Every week, we get on the mic to talk about Hot Takes, Wild Stories, Real Risks, and the kind of decisions that make you say "you did WHAT?" Sometimes we sit down with someone interesting and let them walk us through how they got where they are — and the risks they took along the way. Our guests come from everywhere. You'll be surprised who you end up learning from. Somewhere between the laughs and the arguments, you'll pick up a few risk management lessons without even knowing it. New shows typically post at 8am every Tuesday.

Your Hearing Is Fine. Your Family Disagrees.

Your hearing is fine. Your spouse just mumbles. The restaurant is too loud. And everybody needs to quit talking from the other room. Sound familiar? Dr. Arica Black of The Hearing Doctor joins Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte for a funny, honest conversation about hearing loss—and the excuses we make before getting it checked. Brent shares how missing conversations affected his client meetings, why he finally embraced hearing aids, and why he won’t shut up about custom earplugs. Dr. Black discusses what families notice first, how hearing difficulties can be mistaken for personality traits, and what getting evaluated actually involves. Jeff shares his dad’s experience with hearing care—and decides it’s time to stop talking about being proactive and book his own appointment. We also discuss: Hearing aids, vanity, and changing technology Why follow-up adjustments matter Earbuds, hunting, and loud sporting events Hearing, cognitive health, and quality of life The value of establishing a hearing baseline If your family has been encouraging you to get checked, this episode might sound familiar. If you’re the family member doing the encouraging, send it with love—not during an argument. Don’t Lose Your Friends Over Politics

Can you disagree about politics and still be friends? Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte think a friendship deserves more than being reduced to a vote. In this episode of Risk Raiders, Jeff shares a story about a close friend of nearly 30 years whose political views often differed from his own—and why their friendship mattered more. Jeff and Brent also tackle heated Facebook posts, voting without carrying the argument everywhere, and finding common ground beyond politics. There’s a little “cussing and discussing,” a suggestion to take your next rant into the backyard, and one simple reminder: keep your friends. They’re hard to get. No candidate endorsements. No party scorekeeping. Just a candid conversation about political differences, friendship, and turning down the temperature. What helps you stay friends with someone whose politics differ from yours? Share what works—not who you voted for. Subscribe to Risk Raiders for candid conversations, real-life risks, and a little humor along the way. #RiskRaiders #Friendship #PoliticalDifferences

Runaway Pumpkins, Angry Squirrels & a $200,000 Bad Idea | Risk Raiders

A runaway pumpkin. An escaped iguana. A squirrel with absolutely no respect for personal space. And a hundred-pound lifting test at the center of a $200,000 settlement. Just another day at Risk Raiders. Jeff Shropshire and Brent Borgstedte break down bizarre public reports, questionable decisions, and the everyday risks hiding behind the punch lines. From Halloween decorations going mobile to Jeff’s very personal squirrel encounter, this episode takes the scenic route to some real-world lessons. On the business side, the guys discuss a Fort Worth dealership fire, planning for that middle-of-the-night phone call, choosing who talks to the media, and why Brent likes cameras at home and at the office. Then: an employment discrimination settlement raises a question—does that job requirement actually match the job? Plus, a little Texas Tech football and a friendly reminder: tie down your pumpkin.
