📕 From Behind the Tree
This story was inspired by the University of California, Santa Barbara article "Scientists tracked 4,500 animals and found a surprising human effect." Tracking data from more than 4,500 animals showed that the mere presence of people shifts wildlife movement and habitat use, with an effect that can rival that of roads and developed areas. In the story, a man who has protected a mountain for fourteen years stands behind a tree, unable to get near the thing he protects. Are you allowed to go closer to what you care about?

📕 The One That Didn't Show
This story was inspired by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory article "Tiny NASA Spacecraft Delivers Exoplanet Mission's First Images." A smallsat telescope roughly the size of a large cereal box began ultraviolet observation of low-mass stars, and in its first images several stars appeared in the near ultraviolet while only one appeared in the far ultraviolet — a difference that itself reports the stars' temperatures. In the story, an operator who has written "no detection" for two years finds out what those two words carry. What is the difference between a record that nothing happened and no record at all?

The One Who Sweeps / Road to 2112
Real news → Future story.
Each story imagines a near future inspired by today's real news.
📕 The One Who Sweeps
This story was inspired by the University of Oklahoma article "Hidden 'recycling system' helps keep vision cells healthy." For decades the photoreceptors of the retina were believed to hand all of their waste to neighboring support cells, but researchers found that the photoreceptors also break down damaged proteins in their own lysosomes, and that losing this ability causes the cells to degenerate. In the story, a woman who has always thought of herself as the one who sweeps learns that the ones she swept up after were sweeping too. What was the person you cared for doing where you couldn't see?
