A Review of The Things We Make by Bill Hammack (#366, 13 Oct. 2026)
Just finished The Things We Make - The Unknown History of Invention by Cathedrals to Soda Cans by Bill Hammack, PhD, an chemical engineering professor at the University of Illinois.
I discovered this book while browsing at the Paper Moon, an awesome bookstore in McGregor, Iowa. It explores the world of engineering and its impact on the history of useful objects. Through the lens of the engineering profession, Hammack identifies how useful objects were invented and the process to invent those objects occurred.
I loved this book. I think it should be on the list for all college first year students and for any life long learned fascinated by science and engineering!

A Review of The Mysterious Case of Rudolph Diesel by Douglas Brunt (#365, 20 Sept. 2026)
I just finished Douglas Brunt’s The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel.
Part Agatha Christie, part Walter Isaacson. That’s the book. One track is a mind: a man who trusted the equation before the workshop, who belongs with Edison and the other first-rank inventors and almost never gets that shelf. The other track is a locked room on a night steamer—September 1913, Rudolf Diesel boards for England and does not get off. Suicide, accident, murder, spy operation. Almost no other great inventor dies like that. Almost no biographer has been willing to treat the death as the plot.
There are only a handful of full lives of Diesel. None of them read like this. Brunt fills that void: the blackboard, the navies, the oil, the empty cabin.

Brian McNeil, classics scholar, and Cicero enthusiast, joins the RockneCast once again. In this episode, we explore the Cicero's concept of "happiness", and the good life.
Cicero was a Roman statesman, orator, lawyer and philosopher of happiness. He also heavily influenced the thinking of our nation's Founders, especially Thomas Jefferson and his famous phrase from the Declaration of Independence: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
What did Jefferson mean by that? What did Cicero mean by "happiness"?
