Several things can happen when you are in the cast of a musical. Everyone can be in it for themselves, focused on their part, their role, their talent. Wanting to give the showstopping solo, wow the audience, and be better than everyone else, while looking down on those with supposedly lesser roles.
This was thankfully not the experience Emily and I had in our production of Godspell in 2010. Our cast was so focused on working together. We encouraged each other in each of our performances saying, “Great job” and meaning it. When others messed up lines, rather than roll our eyes, we jumped in to help.
We knew the show couldn’t succeed without each person and their unique gifts and role. We knew we were on the same team with the same goal, so we acted accordingly.
Like that, but even more so, as followers of Christ, we are all on the same team. We need each other, and together we live out the mission of showing the world who Jesus is. We are to lovingly proclaim the gospel to one another and to those who do not yet know him.
