E320 Capital Punishment: Justice in the Public Square
The Pentagon has announced plans to livestream the firing squad execution of Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist who murdered 13 people and wounded dozens more in the 2009 Fort Hood terrorist attack. Military officials say the public broadcast is intended to demonstrate the serious consequences of such crimes. Scripture affirms the government's God-given responsibility to punish evil and uphold justice (Genesis 9:6; Romans 13:4). Capital punishment is a legitimate exercise of lawful authority when carried out justly and with due process. The more difficult question is whether executions should be public. While many support Hasan's execution as a just consequence for an act of terrorism, livestreaming it risks turning justice into spectacle. Punishment should uphold moral order, not satisfy society's depraved appetite for obscene entertainment.
