[…] Some top-level domains, we've seen this kind of a problem before. This is not the first time we've seen this. But I think, Tim, the story here is that CAA... during this hijack really could not prevent the issuance while the attacker controls the entire DNS policy. Because CAA is DNS based. So when I do CAA, CAA stands for certificate of authority authorization, and it's how I dictate which CAs are allowed to issue something for a specific domain. But that is a DNS record. So hypothetically, if you, when you're looking up my DNS record as a CA are being redirected to the wrong destination and you're looking at a false record, the person who controls that false record can say whatever they want, including they can say that the CA is allowed or there's no CAA record at all.
