Beyond the Ribbon: Health ,Screening and Self -Advocacy w/ Alicia Baker -Waring ,FNP
In this heartfelt and empowering episode, we’re moving beyond the pink ribbons of October to have an honest, life-saving conversation about women’s health, preventive screenings, and true self-advocacy. Jay sits down with family nurse practitioner Alicia Baker-Waring to break down what’s really happening during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Alicia shares her personal motivation after losing her dear friend to stage 4 breast cancer at age 37, turning that profound loss into a passionate mission for early detection. Together, they dispel common health myths like the misconception that men don't get breast cancer or that you don't need screenings without a family history, and share clear, practical advice on mammograms, monthly self-exams, and finding a trustworthy primary care provider. If you’ve been putting off your checkups while taking care of everyone else, let this episode be your gentle, grace-filled reminder: your body is a temple, and taking care of your physical well-being is an essential form of self-love and stewardship. Key Takeaways & Highlights Moving Beyond Symbolism: Why pink shirts and ribbons aren't enough and how actionable health screenings and self-advocacy save lives. Turning Grief into Purpose: How the memory of Jessica Baker inspires Alecia to advocate for early detection and comprehensive care. Busting Common Breast Health Myths: Myth 1: Men don't get breast cancer (Men account for fewer than 1 in 100 cases, but warning signs like lumps, skin dimpling, or nipple discharge must still be monitored). Myth 2: No family history means no risk (Anyone can develop breast cancer, regardless of genetics). Myth 3: Younger women are entirely safe (Screenings and self-awareness are critical across all age groups). Screening Guidelines Explained: Understanding standard mammogram timelines (starting around age 40 for average risk, or 30–35 for high risk) and what actually happens during the exam. Step-by-Step Monthly Self-Exams: How to check for changes at home in front of the mirror, in the shower, and lying down. Your Body as a Temple: Viewing health checkups and self-care through a spiritual lens as an act of stewardship rather than selfishness. Raising Children in a Shifting World: Christian Parenting & Faith-Filled Homes
As the back-to-school season begins and routines shift, many parents are left asking: How do I raise my children to know God in a world that is constantly changing? In this episode of Rooted in Grace, host Jay Purdie delivers an encouraging, honest conversation about faith-based parenting, everyday discipleship, and leading your family with confidence instead of fear. Grounded in the truth that God strategically chose you to parent your children in this specific generation, Jay unpacks how true faith is modeled through everyday actions from car rides to bedtime prayers rather than rigid perfection. Jay also shares a deeply personal perspective on parenting her daughter, who was diagnosed with non-verbal autism at age two. Through her story, she reminds us that God knows how to reach every child’s heart, regardless of their diagnosis, age, or circumstances. Whether you are navigating special needs parenting, answering tough questions from teenagers, or establishing daily family devotions, this episode offers a gentle reminder to keep planting seeds of faith and trusting God with the growth. Rooted Reflections Leading by Example: Children learn more from the faith they see modeled in daily life—prayer, forgiveness, and worship—than from what is simply taught. Everyday Discipleship (Deuteronomy 6): How to integrate faith naturally into daily routines like morning commutes, mealtimes, and bedtime. Faith & Special Needs: Encouragement for parents of neurodivergent or special needs children on planting spiritual seeds when the journey looks different than expected. Evolving Friendships: How to Build Godly Community in Every Season of Life
Lately, something has been sitting incredibly heavy on my heart—honestly, it's something I wish I had understood a lot earlier in life. The other day on social media, I asked y'all a simple question: "What do you value most in your friendships?" You came through with some beautiful, honest answers. You talked about equal giving, trust, consistency, loyalty, and having friends who love you enough to tell you about yourself. You talked about pushing each other to grow and praying together. So, if you haven’t guessed it already... yeah, today we are talking about friendship. But we aren't just talking about regular, everyday connections. We are diving deep into what it means to have Godly friendships—and why these relationships matter so much more as we grow, heal, mature, and evolve on our faith journey. 🌟 In This Episode, We Cover: Alignment Over Convenience: Why growing up means shifting from friendships based on proximity to relationships built on spiritual alignment. The Power of Divine Shifting: Realizing that not every connection is meant to go where God is taking you next. History is history, but spiritual growth requires discerning your current season. Entertainment vs. Elevation: How a true biblical community doesn't just entertain your flesh—it strengthens your spirit, holds you accountable in love, and sharpens you like iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17). The Reality of Disconnection: Why moving in separate directions doesn't make anyone the bad guy. You can still hold peace and kindness for someone even if they are no longer in your immediate inner circle. A New Covering: Why shifting dynamics require new spiritual coverings and friends who can sit with you in the low places, not just celebrate your highlights. "Loyalty without alignment leads to exhaustion—mental, emotional, and spiritual. You cannot shrink who you are just to maintain something God is trying to get you to release." If you are in a season where your circle is shifting, feeling a little lighter, or even a little lonely—please know this: You are not isolated; you are being aligned. God is intentional about the people He allows into your space for the next version of you. Be open to the pruning. Be open to the new, healthy connections God is building. 🌿 Connect & Grow If this episode spoke to your heart, please share it with a friend who needs to hear it today!
