Why Does Our Church Love Questions? (Ask Ed Explained)
Jesus asked more than 300 questions in the Gospels and answered maybe five of them, so what does it mean to be a church that actually likes asking? Ed and Leslie get into “Ask Ed,” the Sunday when the congregation fires questions at the pastor in the middle of worship, and why a place that welcomes questions might be the most countercultural thing a church can do. Along the way we stumble into a book about “a chord of gods” (and why a chord needs at least three notes), what the prophet Amos meant when he said God hates our festivals, why Dietrich Bonhoeffer thought only a church that cares about justice should sing Gregorian chant, and how to keep Music Sunday from turning into “quite a show.” Then Leslie takes us home with Bach, improvisation, and the idea that the best faith holds the inherited stuff and the made-up-on-the-spot stuff together. No church background needed, questions are encouraged (obviously), and it’s all free.

Where Do You Feel It? How to Name Your Feelings
Quick, how are you actually feeling, and where is it living in your body? Leslie’s is in her traps, neck, and (surprise!) jaw. Lillian’s is a chest full of excited-but-frantic. In this episode we dig into why naming your feelings takes real courage, why unnamed emotions tend to come out sideways (you feel scared, you act angry), and what to do when someone is irritating you but you also own your own reactions. We get into boundaries (hint: they’re about what you will do, not what you demand of others), what “repair” looks like after a rough conversation, why church can be a pressure cooker for feelings, the feelings wheel, and a handful of Psalms that prove big emotions have always belonged in faith. No church background needed, questions welcome, and the word “fine” is not allowed (unless you really are fine).

Is Church a Charging Station? Getting “Outward Bound”
What if church isn’t the destination and more of a charging station, a place you fill up so you can go back out? Ed and I dig into what it means to be “outward bound,” an idea from author Vernard Eller that flips the usual church lament (“we used to have more people”) into a better question: how curious are we about the world around us? We get into spiritual batteries and why a nap might rest you without actually energizing you, the weight-training-and-watercolors theory of what recharges people, and how reaching out can start as small as a note in a neighbor’s mailbox. Plus, why we’re pretty sure it’s impossible to be lonely in the Round Hill choir. Running on empty but wanting to care about something bigger? Pull up a chair, questions welcome.
