The chicken pox theory with respect to love | Emotions | Podcast

I call it the Chickenpox Theory of Love: love, like chickenpox, is something most people go through at least once. The first exposure usually comes with fever—intense attachment, heartbreak, confusion—but it also builds emotional antibodies. Those who experience love and breakup early often learn regulation, detachment, and self-awareness with time. Those who encounter it much later sometimes suffer more, not because they love deeper, but because the emotional system is less flexible by then. The real immunity doesn’t come from pain itself, but from reflection after pain—without processing, heartbreak doesn’t heal, it just mutates. Love doesn’t weaken us; unprocessed love does.
