About RUF at UNCW

Reformed University Fellowship is a Christian campus ministry at UNCW. RUF exists for the "convinced" and the "unconvinced," the lost, and the found. Our weekly Large Group helps students come to understand, know, and follow Jesus Christ as they walk through their college years. RUF seeks to lay a foundation for a lifetime of loving Jesus and serving him in all areas of life. Whoever you are and whatever you believe, you're welcome at RUF! Loving With Our Words (Deut. 5:20, Ephesians 4:25, 29-5:2)

Welcome to the Reformed University Fellowship at UNCW Podcast. Reformed University Fellowship at UNCW is a community of students learning to love Jesus, to love others, and love our campus. We’re a group for the convinced and the unconvinced, the confident and the doubting, the struggling and the seeking. Each week, we will post the messages from our RUF Large Group meetings at UNCW. This fall, we’re focusing on the book of Deuteronomy and the Ten Commandments. This week, we're looking at the power of our words. God has given humanity the capacity for bringing life and death through the power of our tongue. In the ninth command, he shows us how to use that power to love our neighbor and reflect his own goodness, beauty and truth. Q. What is the aim of the ninth command? A. “That I never give false testimony against anyone, twist no one’s words, not gossip or slander, nor join in condemning anyone rashly or without a hearing. Rather, in court and everywhere else, I should avoid lying and deceit of every kind; these are the very devices the devil uses, and they would call down on me God’s intense wrath. I should love the truth, speak it candidly, and openly acknowledge it. And I should do what I can to guard and advance my neighbor’s good name.” (Heidelberg Catechism, Q &A 112) https://bibleproject.com/videos/9th-commandment-do-not-bear-false-witness/ (https://bibleproject.com/videos/9th-commandment-do-not-bear-false-witness/) https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/catastrophic-counsins/ (https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/catastrophic-counsins/) Quotes: “People who know better must stop lying to themselves about how their righteous indignation is just an excuse for their vicious impulses. … In the social media age, a healthy part of loving others requires that you just shut up. “— Matthew Loftus "Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing; / 'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands; / But he that filches from me my good name / Robs me of that which not enriches him / And makes me poor indeed." --William Shakespeare

   Loving With Our Stuff (Deut. 5:19, 15:7–8; Matt 6:19–21, 24; Ephesians 4:28)

Tonight’s message looks at the eighth command, which forbids stealing and commands God’s people to love their neighbor by protecting their property and possessions. QUOTES: You shall not steal. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor’s money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income.”- Martin Luther’s Small Catechism “Property is … a loan, a trust from God. Like the talents in the parable, it is a test of our faithfulness, and we may keep it only so long as we use it well. The size of our bank account, like the size of our biceps, is neither good nor bad in itself, but only in what we do with it; should we use either money or muscle wickedly, our fellow men have the duty of stopping us somehow.”— Joy Davidman “If you are selfish, and make yourself and your own private interests your idol, God will leave you to yourself, and let you promote your own interests as well as you can.  But if you do not selfishly seek your own, but do seek the things that are Jesus Christ’s, and the things of your fellow human beings, then God will make your interest and happiness his own charge, and he is infinitely more able to provide for and promote it than you are. The resources of the universe move at his bidding, and he can easily command them all to subserve your welfare.”—Jonathan Edwards LINKS: Sermon: Treasure vs. Money by Tim Keller (https://youtu.be/YEvuXAucbd8?is=hJ5X-ZYJS-Y1dAGp) Blog: Jesus Says Use Money To Make Friends (https://mereorthodoxy.com/make-friends-using-mammon/)

   Unlearning Our Unloving (Deuteronomy 5:18; Matthew 5:27-30, 1 Thessalonians 4: 1-8)

Tonight’s message looks at the seventh command, which forbids adultery and commands God’s people to honor and protect the sexual integrity of ourselves and our neighbors. Quotes: “God loves sex. He conceived, created, and blessed the process by which our bodies know and are known through desire, arousal, foreplay, intercourse, orgasm, and rest. Sex is meant by God to be one of the bridge experiences between earth and heaven. It awakens and intersects our deepest physical and spiritual desires … It is no wonder that the enemy of God is relentlessly committed to fouling both immanent pleasure and transcendent joy. Evil hates sex and is ruthlessly committed to tearing down the bridge between desire and holiness.” - Dan Allender “Society tells us, simultaneously, that sex is no big deal and that it’s the most important thing in the universe. Sex is so meaningless that we can have random, casual sex with our next-door neighbor, yet sex is so hugely significant that we can’t possibly live without it.”—Lauren Winner “The biblical vision of sex breaks open three pivotal truths about God's love: it is passionate, always faithful and ultimately fruitful. As we allow the gospel to shape and discipline sexual desire, our lived bodily experience puts these truths on display. Just as passion and faithfulness go together in heaven, that's how it works here on earth too” -Glynn Harrison “I am sure that unless we are confident that the Scriptures tell the truth about sexuality, about being bodies, about being full of sexual longings and desires, unless it does all this, it is hard to believe that they are true when they speak to the rest of life.” -Steve Garber From the Anglican Catechism: 320. What does it mean for you to be chaste? Whether I am married or single, it means I will love and honor others as image bearers of God, not as objects of lust and sexual gratification, and I will refrain from all sexual acts outside of marriage. (Genesis 39:6b–12; Proverbs 6:25–28; Matthew 5:29–30; Philippians 4:8; 1 Thessalonians 4:3–7) 321. How do you benefit from chastity? Chastity establishes wise and godly boundaries that enable me to give freely of myself in friendship, avoid difficulty in marriage, and experience the freedom of integrity before God. (Genesis 39:19–23; Proverbs 11:5–6; Matthew 5:8; 1 Corinthians 7:25–40) Further Reading: The Gospel and Sex (Tim Keller) (https://gospelinlife.com/manual-paper/the-gospel-and-sex/) Why Consent Is Not Enough (Article) (https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/trevin-wax/consent-not-enough/) Sex Without Bodies (Andy Crouch) (https://andy-crouch.com/articles/sex_without_bodies)
