Today - it's Iceland's National Day! Follow the text here: Þjóðhátíðardagur Íslendinga er árlegur frídagur á Íslandi. Hann er haldinn hátíðlegur 17. júní á hverju ári. Þá er minnst stofnunar lýðveldisins Íslands árið 1944. Þá lauk einnig aldalöngum stjórnartengslum við Danmörku. Þessi dagur var valinn þar sem hann er afmælisdagur Jóns Sigurðssonar. Hann var brautryðjandi í upphafi sjálfstæðisbaráttunnar. Það er bronsstytta af Jóni á miðjum Austurvelli í Reykjavík. Fyrstu heimildir um hátíðahöld á 17. júní eru frá 1907. Þá var afmælis Jóns minnst með lúðrablæstri og ræðum í Reykjavík. Núna fagna landsmenn deginum um allt land. Það eru skrúðgöngur í borginni, bæjum og þorpum. Oftast fer lúðrasveit fremst í göngunni. Eftir skrúðgönguna eru haldnar ræður og fjallkonan flytur ljóð. Hún er sögð endurspegla anda íslensku þjóðarinnar og náttúrunnar.
