For over 5000 years, Chinese medicine has nurtured an increasingly refined, observation-based, whole person approach to healing and health care. Calm, holistic and expansive, Chinese medicine takes our whole being into account as it considers what's ailing us. A practitioner specializing in female health and a teacher of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, Dr. Andrea Thorpe shares both her deep passion for this medical philosophy and her clinician's keen eye for detail in a podcast that will change the way you think about healthcare.
Andrea teaches medical professionals internationally. She is faculty at Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. S1E8 Presenting The Case
IN THIS EPISODE: How Chinese medicine sees us in our totality and sees no difference between our lived experience and how that manifests in our bodies physically and/or psycho-emotionally.
SHOW NOTES:
As we have travelled on this journey together, you have heard how for well over 3 decades my story as a human has been intricately interwoven with that of Chinese medicine, first as a patient, then as a student and now as a doctor.
Through this craft I have witnessed thousands of women reconnect with themselves in ways they never imagined possible, and the spirit of this podcast is to introduce and invite everyone I can reach into this rich and meaningful world, and discover how this medicine, by its very nature, touches our humanity.
You may have witnessed how my story is no different from anyone else’s and how all of OUR stories interweave seamlessly with the story of this medicine.
Yes, with this podcast, I am tooting the horn of my profession. But I am doing so because I wholeheartedly believe it’s worth tooting!

S1E7 The Courage To Listen
IN THIS EPISODE: How CHINESE MEDICINE gives each of us the COURAGE TO LISTEN - not merely to what our doctors say, but to what our own bodies are telling us. Our bodies can be subtle sometimes in making it clear what's ailing us. By putting us in touch with our bodies - and keeping us in touch with them - Chinese medicine facilitates finding the courage to listen and get healthy.
SHOW NOTES:
Here’s a question: when in the grips of a health crisis – or any crisis for that matter – when every cell in our body is firing on all cylinders - when what we are living is eliciting deep seated emotions of fear and uncertainty — when any or all of that is happening to us, do we have the courage to listen?
When we find ourselves in such a situation, can we move away from reactivity? From judgement? Can we move away from shutting down? Or the need to control?
Can we listen?
Can we make space for each other to feel more - particularly when what we are feeling is deeply uncomfortable and threatens our sense of control and/or our sense of self.
Can we listen?
This is the invitation we give through Chinese medicine. By the very way it sees us, by its compassion, Chinese medicine invites us to a space that gives us the ability to experience ourselves and our bodies in ways we never imagined possible.
Like all Ancient Traditions show us, the practice of Chinese medicine is a practice that is rooted in observation, in listening.
And, to benefit from the wisdom inherent in this medical tradition, first we are invited to find the courage to do just that, to listen.

S1E6: The Finite Mindset
IN THIS EPISODE: How having a "FINITE MINDSET" can negatively impact our HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE choices. What determines success or failure when it comes to our health and our relationship with our bodies? The differences between HOW WE THINK and HOW WE FEEL - and how CHINESE MEDICINE helps us navigate between them.
SHOW NOTES:
Do we have a finite mindset when it comes to our health?
Having a finite mindset - where everything is limited including thought - can create any number of problems for us. We can convince ourselves that untrue things are true; that never makes them true.
Keeping an entirely open mind - the infinite mindset - is our topic in this episode.
I first encountered JILL BLAKEWAY, best selling author of Energy Medicine 25 years ago. Her thinking changed my thinking about Chinese medicine and how best to practice it. Her words inspired me to move away from the finite, results-and-solutions driven attitude and redefined to me (and for me) what it means to me to practice medicine.

S1E5: What Are Our Health Expectations?
IN THIS EPISODE: What are our health expectations and do they reflect who we are individually - and our bodies? How Chinese medicine helps each of us have a better relationship with our bodies, rooted in our lived experiences and unique brand of being. How the wrong expectations create confusion. And how Chinese medicine is especially good at connecting women to their bodies and to themselves as individuals.
SHOW NOTES:
During the Ming dynasty (1368 to 1644) women’s role in Chinese society was very clearly defined. The duties of women of the upper echelons of society - these were the wives and daughters of scholars and men of official rank - was to produce an heir who would carry the family legacy. In other words, a son.
Meanwhile, they would bind their daughter’s feet and teach them the ways of proper conduct through the recitation of poetry.
One such woman was TAN YUNXIAN – who some of you may have read about in LISA SEE'S New York times best seller “ LADY TAN'S CIRCLE OF WOMEN”. Tan Yunxian lived from 1461 to 1556 (Mid-Ming dynasty) and, contrary to the norms of the time and thanks to the training she received from her grandparents, became a doctor.
She is the author of Miscellaneous Records of a Female Doctor - the first written account of the application of medical care by a woman doctor.

S1E4: The Ripple Of Hormones
IN THIS EPISODE: You'll hear how Chinese medicine is especially well suited to treat women and women's health. I'll explore and explain what makes that so - while describing my own work using Chinese medicine to treat women’s hormonal health.
SHOW NOTES:
I specialize in treating women and women’s hormonal health. Chinese medicine, has demonstrated over its 5000 year history, how it is perfectly suited to treating women and pretty much anything and everything that might impact our health, our well-being and our happiness.
Those three things aren’t the same – but they’re all interconnected – as we all know from lived experience. Impact one and the other two will feel it.

S1E3: The Language Of Healing
THIS EPISODE: Human beings think metaphorically. Meaning, we compare ourselves to things not at all like us as a way to reveal deeper things about us. The Chinese language is richly metaphorical. So, it's not surprising that Chinese medicine sees us the same way, too. Those metaphors - combined with 5000 years of keen observation of us - explain why and how Chinese medicine can keep us healthy and maintain balance between all our systems.
SHOW NOTES:
Our introduction of Chinese medicine continues with a brief look at Chinese medicine's long, rich history. Where did it come from? Why did it even arise? There are answers to those questions! In the 3,000 years it's been around, Chinese medicine has witnessed a lot of history. It's own began during a pandemic (not unlike the one we all just experienced with COVID).
Since then, Chinese medicine has seen - and treated people through boom times and catastrophes and everything in between.
And with all the profound lifestyle and cultural changes each portended, over time, diseases, too have changed, like COVID has. They've adapted to us. Yet through it all, the fundamental principles on how our bodies respond to our environment and reflect our existence, Those have remained steadfast and constant, and so too has Chinese medicine.
That constancy and steadfastness lie at the core of Chinese medicine's excellence. How did it achieve that core and its excellence? Wouldn't you know? Turns out, there's a story to that, too!

S1E2: What Are You Willing To Give Up?
IN THIS EPISODE: How JUDGMENT impacts our well-being is the springboard for the question we’re asking today. It’s a simple one but with multiple complex answers: “What are you willing to give up?” That is, what are you willing to give up in order to get healthy?
SHOW NOTES:
The Greek physician and philosopher Hippocrates said “Before you heal someone, ask her if she is willing to give up the things that make her sick”.
Hippocrates wrote that two thousand six hundred years ago and it’s equally true today. And it can be bitingly ironic - but not at all unusual – when, among the things that make a patient sick, is the patient herself.
One of the things Hippocrates was referring to – maybe one of the main things keeping the patient from getting well – is judgment. We’ve all experienced judgment. We’ve all been judged by others. It’s not the nicest feeling, is it? But, what about when we judge ourselves?
Healing is never linear and it may in many cases involve discomfort.
The healing art of Chinese medicine provides a structure that allows for observation without judgment. It allows for the observation of who we are and our individuality. And the unique and nuanced expression of that. It allows for the affirmation of our experience by making us feel heard, seen, understood and supported.
That is the beating heart that moves us away from rigidity and judgment. Healing is never linear, never stops and never should.

S1E1: Physician, Heal Thyself
Chinese Medicine is about the relationship between practitioner and patient, but also between practitioner and the medicine. And, just as important, there's the practitioner's relationship with themselves. What separates Chinese medicine from Western medicine is that, in Chinese medicine, the practitioner and their journey really matter. This podcast will offer you an intimate, front row seat into my journey as a practitioner of Chinese medicine. And where better to start than at the very beginning! How I learned about Chinese medicine, how it changed my life and changed my life's course.
