晚清之时，上海十里洋场，繁华甲于天下。客游上海，灯红酒绿、醉生梦死、车水马龙，恍如人生一梦。孙家振先生自谓警梦痴仙者，乃借杜牧之“十年一觉扬州梦”之意，以自身经历警示后来者善自珍重。<br />赛珍珠于1892年6月26日出生于美国弗吉尼亚州，但她刚满四个月便被父母带到了中国，来到江苏镇江，从此开始了她长达四十年的中国生活。1929年，赛珍珠在金陵大学的寓所中完成了小说《大地》的创作，这部作品是赛珍珠通过自己的双重文化视角对中国农民与社会的真实写照。

年年生儿子，家里满是福气了--这女人带给他好多的福气呵！他对他的父亲嚷道：<br>『爹，又添一个儿子了，我们只好将大的一个放到你的床上来！』<br>老人欣喜了。他久想那孩子来睡在他床上，借少年的骨血，温暖他这怕冷的老骨头，然而那小孩子却一向不肯离开他母亲。然而现在呢，他用了那双因为幼小还不稳当的脚摇摆着进来，向他母亲旁边的小弟弟凝视了一下，于是他由沉靜的小眼睛觉察到别人代替了自己的位置，这才情情愿愿地任自己被放到他祖父的床上去。
