[…] We have no problem. You know, there would be maybe one black child in your class, maybe not at all. And they were totally isolated. Fifteen years after the Brown ruling, Black parents in Holmes County, Mississippi, and in dozens of other districts ran out of patience. On October 29, 1969, in a case called Alexander v. Holmes County Board of Education, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that, quote, continued operation of segregated schools under a standard of allowing all deliberate speed for desegregation is no longer constitutionally permissible. Every district, the court said, had to end its dual school system at once. […]
