Sapphic and Spiritual explores the intersection between queerness and spirituality. Hosted by Karly Philips, Sapphic and Spiritual was created from the notion that being queer is an inherently spiritual path. Like all spiritual paths, embracing our queerness takes us on a journey of self-discovery, leading us to wholeness and discovering the magic within. Through intimate conversations and thought-provoking discussions, we navigate the complexities of identity, belonging, and personal growth within the LGBTQ+ community through a spiritual lens. From reclaiming sacred spaces to honoring diverse spiritual practices, Sapphic and Spiritual offers a space for listeners to explore the richness of their own experiences and beliefs. As a neurodivergent lesbian, mystic, writer, psychic, and social worker, Karly vulnerably weaves together her lived experiences with spiritual insights to uplight and inspire the awakening of others to their own magic.

The Initiation: A Spell for Surrender and Becoming
This offering is part of a new direction, an expansion of this podcast, into something more like a living, breathing grimoire.
A collection of spells, poems, soundscapes, transmissions, and channelings for those of us living in the liminal. More to come as this project is being unearthed in a slow, tender way.
The Initiation is a poetic soundspell for those in the midst of transformation. A passage through collapse, surrender, and the slow return to self.
May it bless your threshold.
With love and solidarity,
-Karly

A Spell for Protestor Protection
I’ve been away from the podcast for a while, reflecting, creating, healing, and reshaping what this space might become.
A new format is on the horizon, but for now, I offer this spell.
It was spoken in devotion to all who are resisting, marching for justice, holding grief, and refusing to be silenced.
May it cloak us in courage. May it remind us we are not alone. May it protect all who stand for liberation.
Standing in love and solidarity,
—Karly

Beyond the Rainbow: The True Spirit of Pride
Is there more to Pride month than rainbows and parades? In this episode, we explore movements and activism that led to the modern day Pride movement. From the birth of the homophile movement that produced LGBTQ organizations fighting for change, such as The Mattachine Society and The Daughters of Bilitis, we uncover the roots of resistance that led to Stonewall and beyond. We emphasize that Pride is more than commercial celebrations—it's a form of resistance and radical self-love. We explore the spiritual interconnectedness of all movements grounded in liberation and discuss how queer liberation relates to liberation for Palestine and all who are oppressed. We highlight Palestinian resilience and discuss the concept of revolutionary optimism.

Healing the Mother Wound: Navigating the Triple Goddess to Discover the Mother Within
In this episode, we embark on a journey through the transformative phases of the Triple Goddess, with a focus on the Mother archetype. We confront the exclusionary nature of gender-specific language associated with the Triple Goddess, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and alternative language options for resonance with diverse experiences. We explore the characteristics of each phase of the Triple Goddess, Maiden, Mother, and Crone, using the mythology of Persephone, Demeter, and Hecate as a guide.
Central to our discussion is the concept of the Mother Wound, an emotional wound resulting from the absence of nurturance, protection, and guidance in childhood and it's impact on self-esteem and identity. Introducing reparenting as a healing process, we explore strategies for nurturing the inner child or inner maiden and cultivating self-love and acceptance.

Beyond Binaries: Balancing the Divine Feminine and Masculine
In today's episode, we dive deep into the concepts of the divine feminine and divine masculine—energies that often get misinterpreted in mainstream spiritual discussions. Karly shares personal experiences and extensive research that challenges the traditional gender constructs often associated with these energies. We discuss how these constructs can alienate and exclude queer identities, specifically addressing the harmful implications for the queer community and the perpetuation of heteronormative ideologies within spiritual spaces.
The conversation takes a critical look at how the idea of divine energies has been exploited in harmful ways, as seen in cult movements like those documented in "Escaping Twin Flame" and "Desperately Seeking Soulmate." Karly emphasizes the importance of recognizing these energies as esoteric and abstract, rather than as rigid categories defined by physical traits or social expectations.
We explore the Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang, discussing how these interconnected energies exist beyond binary interpretations and support a more inclusive understanding of gender and spiritual energies. The episode also draws connections to wider societal issues, illustrating how imbalances in these energies can reflect and perpetuate broader cultural dysfunctions.
Practical insights are offered on how individuals can identify and balance these energies within themselves, with a particular focus on how these practices can be integrated into daily life, relationships, and personal growth. Karly shares personal anecdotes and professional insights, underscoring the transformative potential of embracing both energies in a balanced way, irrespective of gender.
By the end of this episode, listeners will gain a nuanced understanding of the divine feminine and masculine, equipped with strategies to explore and balance these energies in ways that honor personal and collective well-being, diversity, and inclusion.

Queer Witches: The Craft of Resistance
In today's episode, we're diving into the intersection of queer identity and witchcraft, exploring the allure many queer women feel towards the supernatural. We start by questioning the common stereotype that ties lesbians and other queer folks to mystical practices like astrology and tarot reading, then journey through the historical roots of witchcraft that predate monotheistic traditions, highlighting the deep-seated connections to Goddess worship evident in ancient Venus figurines found across Europe and Asia.
As we delve into the dark history of the witch trials, we discuss the societal and gender dynamics that led to the persecution of women who deviated from the norms, framing this in the context of modern-day witch hunts that still target queer communities and women who challenge patriarchal values.
We connect historical witch hunts to contemporary issues, including the systemic oppression visible in recent legislative actions against women's and transgender rights.
We wrap up with an impromptu guided meditation aimed at healing the witch wound, a term used to describe the collective trauma from centuries of persecution, helping listeners to reclaim their power and embrace their identities.
This episode includes a trigger warning due to discussions on historical violence against women.
Join us next time as we explore the meaning of the divine feminine and divine masculine (spoiler alert: it has nothing to do with gender!)
