Hassle In The Castle: Scooby Doo, Where Are You? (Season 1, Episode 3)
Season 2 is here, gentle souls! We're talking about a classic Scooby Doo episode set in a haunted castle, Hassle In The Castle. So many iconic images came from this episode, but does it hold up? Are any tropes introduced? Do we get any new Shaggy Lore? And does Daphne really deserve her reputation for being "danger-prone"? If you want to follow along with our rewatches and track tropes yourself, you can find our Scooby Tracker here: https://tr.ee/AkrXRZ (https://tr.ee/AkrXRZ) Follow us on Instagram @scarysouppod Our email address: scarysouppod@gmail.com (mailto:scarysouppod@gmail.com)

Season 2 Announcement!
Well Gentle Souls, I can hardly believe it’s been a little over a year since Jess and I first started working on musical cues, sketching ideas for artwork, and doing test recordings on the jankiest gear you can imagine. And even though the first episodes sounded rough and we were figuring out the flow of the podcast while we were releasing episodes, you still showed up to listen! When we needed to take 6 months off because of some pretty heavy family stuff, you let us have that space and still came back to listen when we relaunched. You are simply the best! Heading into autumn, we’re in the mood for something new. Even though the concept of “seasons” is pretty subjective with a podcast like ours, we’ve decided that our October 2nd episode is going to mark the beginning of “Season 2”. We’ll have slightly updated artwork (just a change in colour scheme, really) and a fantastic lineup to carry us through spooky season and into the dead of winter. If you’ve stuck with us this far, thank you! We’re happy to have you in our cozy, spooky little corner of the internet. You’re final girl material, for sure. MadLibs: The Craft (1996)
We've got a short and belated episode for you this week, gentle souls. We've had a crazy couple of weeks in our personal lives, but we still managed to sit down to play a game of MadLibs with the plot of The Craft! Along the way we discuss screaming Ouija boards, bad wigs, and why we're still scared to play Bloody Mary as grown ass adults. As always, the brave among you can find the Decoder Guide over on our Instagram. And remember, you're all final girl material in our books. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-craft-oral-history_n_5734f7c9e4b060aa7819d362 (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/the-craft-oral-history_n_5734f7c9e4b060aa7819d362) https://www.polygon.com/the-craft-retrospective/ (https://www.polygon.com/the-craft-retrospective/) https://womeninhorror.com/reviews-%26-articles/f/retro-review-the-craft-1996 (https://womeninhorror.com/reviews-%26-articles/f/retro-review-the-craft-1996) Follow us on Instagram @scarysouppod Our email address: scarysouppod@gmail.com (mailto:scarysouppod@gmail.com)

It Came From The Thrift Store...Fear Street Super Chiller: Goodnight Kiss
Velcome back, Gentle Souls! Ve promise ve von't suck your blood! That's right, we're talking vampires this week as we break down Goodnight Kiss, by R.L. Stine. It's a vampires-at-the-beach story that pairs well with Joel Schumacher's The Lost Boys. And we get a little bit into theories of why some books capture your imagination and others don't. Nancy Pearl talks about the four doorways to reading: https://youtu.be/WjDMbixPSeQ?si=QZheRW8pADMuAtS5 (https://youtu.be/WjDMbixPSeQ?si=QZheRW8pADMuAtS5) Follow us on Instagram @scarysouppod Our email address: scarysouppod@gmail.com (mailto:scarysouppod@gmail.com)

A Clue For Scooby Doo: Scooby Doo, Where Are You? (Season 1, Episode 2)
Ruh-roh, gentle souls! This episode of Scooby Doo brings up Bethany's completely rational worry that is she ever scuba dives she'll get the bends and Jessica's childhood fear of being swept away in an undertow. We also talk more Shaggy Lore, discuss the questionable physics of cartoons, and desperately try to remember what the heck book we're reading for the next episode. Oh, and Bethany has a couple of suggestions for horror and horror-adjacent movies to pair with this episode of Scooby Doo, Where Are You? What we're reading for the next episode: https://absolutehorror.fandom.com/wiki/Goodnight_Kiss (https://absolutehorror.fandom.com/wiki/Goodnight_Kiss) Follow us on Instagram @scarysouppod Our email address: scarysouppod@gmail.com (mailto:scarysouppod@gmail.com)

MadLibs: Jason Lives - Friday The 13th Part VI (1986)
We're playing MadLibs again! And because it's summer, we're talking about the most iconic summer camp horror franchise, Friday The 13th. Rather than starting at the beginning with 1980's titular film, Bethany decided to watch the 6th film in the series: 1986's Jason Lives. That's right, we're diving into the middles period of slashers. The formula was already becoming stale by this point, but we're still years away from reinvention's like Wes Craven's New Nightmare (1994) and Scream (1996). Join us as Bethany breaks down the time that Friday The 13th dipped its toes in meta humour and leaned into dark comedy. Jess picks the MadLibs words this time, so the summary is truly random. If you're feeling brave and want to know all the gory details, you can find the Decoder Guide on Instagram. Time Machine To November 1987: Stranger Things 5
It's the end of an era, gentle souls! Join us to discuss the final season of Stranger Things. We talk about the value of communal cinematic experiences, the difficulties of world-building through seasons of television with varying tones, and why Nancy Wheeler is one of our favourite fictional characters ever. As with all art, your mileage may vary. Ours certainly did. But ultimately, we found meaningful and cathartic moments that will stick with us. It Came From The Thrift Store...Galaxy Of Fear #2: City Of The Dead
Bethany is breaking her "no talking about Star Wars on the internet" rule for this one...but really, it's easy to avoid the worst parts of Star Wars fandom when you're talking about Lucasfilm's shameless Goosebumps rip off, Galaxy of Fear! These books are fun genre mash ups that Jessica remembers fondly as favourites that she took out from the library in the late 90s. Content Warning: City Of The Dead (and our discussion of it) contains mentions of child death, child endangerment, parental death, and grief. Take care of yourselves, gentle souls. The Night The Podcast Came Out Of The Grave...
We're still here, we promise! Life has been...a LOT and it took us a while to find our groove again, but we're returning later this week with a FULL episode. And eventually our monster-sized Stranger Things 5 episode will release...it's just taking a lot of work to edit down our many thoughts. As mentioned in this pint-sized episode, we want to share some resources if the state of the world has you feeling down and you'd like to take action. Time Machine To Spring Break 1986: Stranger Things 4
We've finally caught up to the present...the past...whenever it is...we're talking Stranger Things 4, gentle souls. It's arguably the most gruesome season, but it's also probably our favourite. It's thematically rich and introduces new characters that capture (and break) our hearts. Frankenstein, The Empire Strikes Back, A Nightmare On Elm Street, and Silence Of The Lambs are all key texts for this season--and we love it! Find out who our favourite couple is on the show, what we think might happen in Stranger Things 5, and just how much fan fiction Bethany reads (it's a lot). The Nutcracker Scoob (1984)
Welcome back, gentle souls! We’re recapping the final episode of The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries, The Nutcracker Scoob (1984). Other than The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, we're not super familiar with 1980s Scooby-Doo so this was an adventure. The Scooby gang got an unfortunate update for the 1980s, with Velma being replaced by the insufferable Scrappy-Doo. Mystery solving gets over-shadowed by hijinks and too many Christmas references. And Bethany’s got some theories about the influence of Ronald Reagan on the episode’s villain… It's Dangerous To Go Alone: https://dressember-ca2025.funraise.org/fundraiser/jessica-crewe (https://dressember-ca2025.funraise.org/fundraiser/jessica-crewe) Follow us on Instagram @scarysouppod Our email address: scarysouppod@gmail.com (mailto:scarysouppod@gmail.com)

Coming Soon: The Nutcracker Scoob (1984)
Hello, gentle souls! It's dangerous out there and our podcasting plans got derailed by life...we're hitting pause on recapping Stranger Things for a week so that we can catch our breath and enjoy some family time. But we're still dropping a new episode--it's just going to be a couple days late. Coming to you Sunday morning is our thoughts on the final episode of The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries, The Nutcracker Scoob (1984). Other than The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, we're not super familiar with 1980s Scooby-Doo so this will be an adventure. Will we find the gang updated for the 1980s? Will all the tropes make an appearance? Will we get more Shaggy Lore? Who can say? Tune in Sunday to find out! Time Machine To Summer 1985: Stranger Things 3 (2019)
Code Red, gentle souls! On Friday, we’re flashing back to the summer of 1985. Remember the mall? Remember summer break shenanigans with friends? Remember…a giant goo monster terrorizing you while the Russians invade your small town? Just us? The Stranger Things family continues to grow this season, with the addition of Maya Hawke’s Robin and the promotion of Priah Ferguson’s Erica to regular cast. We are both here for every moment with our beloved Scoops Troop. We’re less fond of the simplification of Hopper’s character into a brawling action cop. We talk influences, that mall culture vibe, and the sweetest Russian scientist to ever grace the screen: our dearly departed Alexei. Come along as we revisit our friends in Hawkins all month long! That means bonus episodes, because we wanted to give each season its own episode. And we'll also be dropping a mini-episode with our first impressions of Stranger Things 5, Volume 1! Time Machine To Halloween 1984: Stranger Things 2 (2017)
Do you copy, gentle souls? We're back to talk about Stranger Things 2! We love the blossoming father-daughter relationship between Hopper and Eleven, Steve and Dustin's bromance, and our sweet cinnamon roll Bob Newby! We're breaking down the meta casting of Paul Reiser, how the Duffers decided to expand the scope of their world, and why Steve is the best mom (among several excellent moms) in the show. Come along as we revisit our friends in Hawkins all month long! That means bonus episodes (like this one!), because we wanted to give each season its own episode. And we'll also be dropping a mini-episode with our first impressions of Stranger Things 5, Volume 1! Time Machine To November 1983: Stranger Things (2016)
Do you copy, nerds? Has it really been almost a decade since we first visited Hawkins, Indiana? Bethany and Jessica jumped on the Stranger Things hype train pretty early and never got off. Bethany has rewatched the series multiple times, but this is Jessica's first rewatch. This show has so many things we love: found families, complicated characters, and a compelling mystery. Come along as we revisit our friends in Hawkins all month long! That means bonus episodes, because we wanted to give each season its own episode. And we'll also be dropping a mini-episode with our first impressions of Stranger Things 5, Volume 1!
