[…] So first of all, so these are two sort of separate phenomena. They have a lot of similarities and connections. And we'll talk about that later on, especially when we talk about like Sondheim, where the two in some cases, well, a lot of cases, actually, it's hard to tell the two because they're really sort of functioning all together in these one different ways, but it's like essentially a vamp. One way to think about it, it's like a self-contained sort of unit of like music. It's like a little, like something that lasts like a measure or two. It'll be like something in between two repeat songs and it'll say vamp till ready, you know, where it's like the idea of, I think one reason why it's, these are so prominent in musical theater, it's just sheer utility because it's a matter of putting on a show and being like, well, so-and-so's entrance is light.
