[…] It's like one of the challenges, actually, right? Because it's very easy to say, like, we feed people or like we save dogs and much less compelling to necessarily say we help PhDs get involved in policy. Depends on your audience. Maybe it's true. It's true. So the language is really confusing, right? So we say nonprofit versus charity. People also call it the independent sector, the third sector, and all of those different vocabularies sort of signal to different parts of it. And I always teach my students, it's just a tax category. And so we're thinking about a set of organizations that have a certain kind of status that the IRS has granted, that they meet a set of sort of basic qualifications, that they're a private organization, that they're serving the public good, which is sort of broadly defined, that shareholder revenue doesn't return to those involved, and that they're not involved in partisan politics.
