S3 E02: Doing More with Less: Budget Cuts, Class Sizes & Tech Audits | Schoolwide Download

Budget cuts, rising class sizes, and fewer resources—sound familiar? In this episode of Schoolwide Download, hosts Dave Clark and Robin Szary tackle a reality hitting school districts everywhere: doing more with less. While tightening the belt isn't new in education, the pressure can feel overwhelming. Dave and Robin look back on their own classroom experiences (from $125 annual budgets to teaching 36 kids in a room) to explore how educators can shift from panic to creativity. They break down how to manage larger class sizes, foster 21st-century collaboration, adapt to losing pull-out support, and perform a personal "tech audit" to simplify your digital tools. In this episode, we discuss: The Reality of "Less": Budget cuts, staffing reductions, and added pressure on educators. Classroom Management & Larger Class Sizes: Creative room setups, group dynamics, and building collaboration out of necessity. Adapting to Loss of Pull-Out Support: How whole-group instruction and teacher flexibility are shifting. Try This Tomorrow — The Technology Audit: Reviewing your apps, subscriptions, and tools to trim the excess and keep what actually works. Try This Tomorrow: Take 10 minutes to perform a Tech Audit! Look at all the digital tools, apps, and paid subscriptions you use in your classroom or district. Ask yourself: Which tools am I actually using? Is there a free version that does 90% of what I need? What can we forfeit to keep our absolute must-haves? Join the Conversation: What's the largest class size you've ever taught, or what's your go-to budget-friendly resource? S3 E01: Solo Teaching Reality Check: What They Didn't Teach You in College | Schoolwide Download

Dave and Robin tackle the transition from student teaching to solo teaching, sharing the unexpected reality checks, unwritten rules, and duty bell lessons every educator experiences. Full Show Notes & Summary: Welcome to Season 3 of Schoolwide Download! 🎙️✨ Hosts Dave Clark and Robin Szary kick off the new season by diving into a defining rite of passage every single educator can relate to: the leap from student teaching to solo, unaccompanied teaching. While teacher prep programs do their best, there are some classroom truths you can only learn on the job. From navigating unexpected duty assignments (hello, syrup-covered breakfast duty and cafeteria chaos!) to that exact moment the classroom door closes and you realize you're on your own without a safety net, Dave and Robin share their honest, hilarious, and defining "first-year" reality checks. They also break down the unwritten rules of school culture—like why you should always build strong relationships with your secretaries, custodians, cafeteria staff, and schedule makers—and why taking on new challenges, even when intimidating, can shape your entire career trajectory. Key Takeaways & Topics Covered: The Transition to Solo Teaching: What college prep programs leave out and why "baptism by fire" is a real thing. The Unwritten Rules: Why supporting your building's support staff (secretaries, janitors, counselors, and lunch staff) is key to survival. The "Duty Bell" Evolution: From in-school suspension duty to cafeteria chaos, and what unstructured time teaches you about building student relationships. Overcoming First-Year Fear: Why saying "yes" to intimidating opportunities (even middle school!) can turn into your passion. 💡 Try This Tomorrow: If you are student teaching, interning, or mentoring a new teacher: step into the unstructured spaces! Don't skip out on study halls, cafeteria duties, or morning bus drop-offs. Shadowing or leaning into these duty bells gives you crucial exposure to school culture, helps you build genuine relationships with students outside of academic pressures, and prepares you for the true day-to-day of classroom life.
