Some thoughts on the deeply disturbing BBC radio interview in which Nick Robinson demanded that Green leader Zack Polanski agree that Israelis have a right to a safe homeland, and Polanski answered in the affirmative - but Robinson didn't recognise it as an answer because he seemed to be starting from the preconception that an Israeli homeland only counts as 'real' if Israel gets to expel Palestinians from it or oppress Palestinians within it.

Scot Goes Popcast Episode 92: Tories' plan to impose new nuclear power stations on Scotland means they have repudiated "The Vow"
Andrew Bowie's announcement that a UK Tory government would impose new nuclear power stations in Scotland means that the Tories will be stripping planning powers from the Scottish Parliament, which have been devolved since right from the start in 2014. This constitutes a clear repudiation of The Vow, which promised that the Scottish Parliament was "permanent" and would be granted "extensive new powers". A million miles from any sense of permanence or entrenchment, the Scottish Parliament now looks like an extraordinarily vulnerable institution that is subject to having its powers arbitrarily stripped away at any time. The case for revisiting the referendum result of 2014, which was secured on an utterly false prospectus, has never been more overwhelming.

Scot Goes Popcast Episode 91: Watch out for ORCS! Rory Stewart thrillingly brings back "The Middleland"
Just when you thought it was safe to take a nice day out in the Southern Uplands, or the Lake District, or the Yorkshire Dales, our old pal Rory Stewart has made the whole thing seem a lot more scary once again by lumping all these places together and rebranding them as a Game Of Thrones-style fantasy medieval kingdom called "The Middleland". It's a wheeze he first dreamt up in the run-up to the 2014 Scottish independence referendum in order to hoodwink people into thinking the south of Scotland is not "really" Scottish and is instead part of a "middle" grey zone along with a big chunk of the north of England, and can thus only really be described as "British". Just one snag - none of this has any basis in historical fact. The territory Rory claims as being part of "The Middleland" was actually split in medieval times between the Brythonic-speaking Kingdom of Strathclyde (part of what Welsh people call their Hen Ogledd, meaning Old North) and the Old English-speaking Germanic kingdom of Northumbria. Far from jointly representing some sort of unified pan-British culture, the peoples of those two entities wouldn't even have been able to communicate with each other unless they happened to speak a bit of Latin.
