About ScottCast

My name’s Scott James, and for forty years I’ve been yapping into Colorado’s ears - on the radio, in the community, behind a podium, and probably in your inbox - so you could say we’ve got history. I’ve worn a lot of hats: broadcaster, advocate, elected official, professional loudmouth, and friend. Now I’m cramming all that charm, wisdom, and unsolicited opinion into The Scott Show - a no-holds-barred brain-dump of my thoughts on culture, society, spirituality, politics, and whatever else I think the world’s too dumb to understand without my help.

Episode 91: Seaons change, so must we

The changing seasons remind us of God’s perfect timing in all things, both natural and national. As we face political shifts and cultural challenges, we must stand firm in truth. Trust in God’s control, knowing that He guides the rise and fall of nations according to His divine plan.

   Episode 90: Cigar Stories 9 - Fall

It’s been too long since I recorded a ScottCast, but tonight felt right—cigar in hand, Manhattan by my side, and the last warmth of summer fading. There’s symbolism here, and I’ll unpack it in the podcast. Tune in for thoughts on faith, politics, and life’s shifting seasons.

   Episode 89: Commitment, not comfort.

Well, after a 75-day hiatus, I decided to record a show. I explain why in the ScottCast. This is the place where you are to type “Show Notes,” but there are truly no references to provide for this show, I just ask that you listen, like, follow, and subscribe. Feel free to comment below. The poem I quote – or at least paraphrase – and yes, I quoted poetry, is called Stopping by woods on a snowy evening by Robert Frost. Read it here.

   Episode 88: Conversation and Participation

I’m still on the “ation” kick that I spoke so passionately about in Episode 87. Today, let’s dig into conversation and participation. Conversation I received a couple of questions via email/social media on Episode 87: All the Ations. I welcome your questions/comments. Contact me HERE. Do you support re-instating public comment at BOCC meetings? Kelly via Facebook Instant Messenger Please elaborate more on how you believe we are in Romans 1 times. Timothy via email Okay – I answer both questions in this Episode 88 of the ScottCast. Participation I invited a guest – Natalee Tennant – on the ScottCast […]

   Episode 87: All the "ations"

-ATION. : Noun suffix. The action or process of doing something. Britannica Dictionary Frustration. Consternation. Trepidation. Indignation. All over the bloviation that exists in today’s political atmosphere. There is tremendous uncertainty. We have lost faith in our institutions. We don’t know who to believe. As mentioned in the ScottCast – where do I think we’re at? Romans 1. Episode 86: The Conversation

Interesting that this is Episode 86. When I ran for US House, I was advised to make myself a smaller target and pull down my blog and podcasts. The advisement made sense in that the games politicians play involve taking their opponent’s words, lifting them out of context, twisting them, and weaponizing them. I deleted decades of work. Some amazing. Some complete drivel. I tried archiving it, but the archive tools – or more likely, the operator of said tools – have failed. So I guess we start again. I have kept this website – sort of a diary, sort […]

   Episode 85: Hugh

This website has been silent since October 27, which is nothing overly different. It will fall silent for days, weeks, and sometimes months at a time because I get caught up in the busyness of life and after all, this personal page is just a “hobby.” But I woke up at 2 A.M. this morning and knew I had to write this post – or record a podcast – or both… and I have been dreading it. I simply do not have the words to write or record that which would do Hugh McKean justice. I don’t know what to say about what he meant to this state, to his family, to me, and to Amy. I don’t have the words. But I still know I must write/record something because while I don’t have the words, the sentiment – the love and the heartache – cannot go unsaid. And somehow this blog/podcast and, for that matter, my life, cannot again come alive and move forward with the purpose that God has instilled in me until I acknowledge and mourn in my own way the man who was like my brother. Writing it would be impossible. Every time I try to wrap my head around some structure or outline, it becomes too big. Too overwhelming. No one would read it. I don’t know what makes me think anyone will listen to this podcast, but “talking it through” will be easier – more comfortable for me. So I’ll try to record it in a podcast – and that effort will be fully and completely inadequate, but it will be a demarkation – a waypoint – by which I can chart my course forward. As I typed those words, God nudged me to record a podcast with Amy and Hugh’s kids and Amy’s kids. That really feels good, and if they are willing, I will do that and use it as the way we move forward with the Regular Folks Rising (https://web.archive.org/web/20230121192506/https://regularfolksrising.com/) project that Hugh and I were both so fond of – but never really leaned into because, well, busyness and life. Yet another stark reminder that we are not promised tomorrow. Enough writing. I’m writing the blog post that accompanies the podcast before I record the audio file. I’ll post that here… Now, for some media… In the days that followed Hugh’s death, there were so many articles, news stories, and tributes. It was overwhelming for me. I can’t imagine what they were for Amy. I’ll share a few of those via links here. My favorite article (https://web.archive.org/web/20230121192506/https://denvergazette.com/politics/elections/he-s-irreplaceable-hugh-mckeans-legacy-of-leadership/article_f899edfe-3c39-5923-b3f3-857275cbb2ca.html) was from Marianne Goodland of Colorado Politics/Denver Gazette. Marianne came to his services. She talked to his friends. She cried along with us. She covered Hugh fairly and humanely. She is a journalist. There are very few like her left. Thank you, Marianne, for honoring my friend. My pal made the New York Pos (https://web.archive.org/web/20230121192506/https://nypost.com/2022/10/31/colorado-gop-official-hugh-mckean-dead-at-55/)t. Episode 84: How are you filling the room?

Sidenote on the Scott Cast – there is no fixed time. I just start talking and stop when I am finished. The idea for this Scott Cast came in the shower – where most ideas for me come from. I got excited and then I lost inspiration. I talked myself out of it. In the Scott Cast – at the 2:04 mark, I mention a link to a blog post I wrote in 2019. The Max Lucado book I reference is called Help is Here (https://web.archive.org/web/20221027204949/https://maxlucado.com/products/help-is-here/). I mention my contact information. You can find all of that for your reference HERE (https://web.archive.org/web/20221027204949/https://scottkjames.com/contact-me/). I mention the Fetterman/Oz debate. Here are some links worth your attention: Fetterman ‘much worse’ than predicted, says reporter who lowered expectations before debate (https://web.archive.org/web/20221027204949/https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/fetterman-much-worse-expected-debate-reporter) Fetterman Faces Fallout From Disastrous Debate: ‘Worst Performance By Any Candidate I Have Ever Seen’ (https://web.archive.org/web/20221027204949/https://www.dailywire.com/news/fetterman-faces-fallout-from-disastrous-debate-worst-performance-by-any-candidate-i-have-ever-seen) Fetterman Opens Debate With ‘Hi. Episode 83: Time is short

And I need to throw something out there. I believe I have said this before, but I am a “procrastinating perfectionist.” I visualize something – you name it – a podcast, blog post, home improvement project, etc. – and then procrastinate setting out on that which I visualize because it will never be as perfect in the natural as it is in my visualization. Weird, I know… I have seemingly so little time – both on my calendar and in my soul (I’ll explain that in the podcast) – and so many ideas that need to come to fruition. I’ll elaborate. Thanks for listening – please subscribe – I’m doing this now just to get something out there. We’ll talk soon – I promise.

Episode 81: Societal rot and what I believe to be the problem

The nation experienced another tragic school massacre yesterday (https://web.archive.org/web/20220526010305/https://www.foxnews.com/live-news/uvalde-texas-school-shooting). On cue, the same old arguments have emerged and I, for one, tire of the same old arguments. It’s not about guns. It’s about societal rot—the decay of a nation’s soul. Does this nation no longer believe in the sanctity of life? Today, I see the repeated question, “What can this nation do about guns?” Wrong question. Let’s ask what this nation can do about mental health. Let’s ask what this nation can do about the loss of institutions and the loss of trust. It’s not about politics, it’s about people. It’s not a problem of too little government, it’s a problem of too little mercy, grace, and God. I make my points more succinctly in this edition of the Scott Cast.
