I Adjusted the Overnight Instruments in a Foundation Sealed Pendulum Vault | SCP Encounter for Sleep
You descend past the pneumatic dampers into Sub-Level 3 and step onto vulcanized rubber matting in regulation sock covers. No hard-soled shoe has touched this floor since 1971. The Sealed Pendulum Vault stretches eighteen meters across โ twelve precision pendulums arranged in a clock-face pattern, each swinging through air so still you can hear the cable whisper at the apex of every arc. Station 7 dominates the room. A 5.4-meter Foucault pendulum with a 28-kilogram brass bob, swinging once every 4.6 seconds. Your job is simple: walk the circuit, read the instruments, log the numbers. And make sure Pendulum 7 never stops.
For eleven nights, you do exactly that. The readings are clean. The vault is quiet. The pendulums swing. Then, on Night 12, standing beside Station 7 during your 02:15 reading, you feel something that isn't vertigo and isn't fatigue. A pull โ faint, steady, bearing 250 degrees. You check the gravimeter on the wall. 980,665,112 microgals. Standard. You write the number in the margin of your form and add a note you almost cross out: perceived lateral pull, approximately fifteen seconds, no instrument correlation.
By Night 15, you've mapped every occurrence against the Moon's transit. The correlation is within four degrees. You're feeling lunar tidal force โ a gravitational signal so small no biological organism should detect it. You schedule one more night of observation. Night 16 is the night the electromagnetic release on Station 7 jams, the amplitude gauge drops below the red line, and you catch twenty-eight kilograms of brass with your bare hands.
The pendulum keeps swinging. Your left hand stays warm. And somewhere deep inside your inner ear, something that was always there finally wakes up.
This is SCP Encounter File #27. Settle in. The pendulums are swinging. The Moon is rising. You won't need to know where it is. You'll feel it.
