💌 Signing Off With Love
Hi, friends! Happy Monday💛 As Caitlin prepares to to welcome their new little human into the world, we are sending you a little signing off episode with a found poem that emerged from all of the conversations we've gathered since we kicked this thing off last year. Thank you for being along for the ride! A Scratch That Poem *Note: Every line from this poem is linked to the Scratch That episode from which it originally sprouted. Hello, little butterbean, (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/letters-from-love-a-la-elizabeth-gilbert/id1768770598?i=1000708975964) Sweet silly goose. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/letters-from-love-a-la-elizabeth-gilbert/id1768770598?i=1000708975964) little anxious heart. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/letters-from-love-a-la-elizabeth-gilbert/id1768770598?i=1000708975964) Dear listener, (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) the freaks, (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reparenting-money-discomfort-and-social-media-exits/id1768770598?i=1000721491548) other weirdos (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reparenting-money-discomfort-and-social-media-exits/id1768770598?i=1000721491548) my sister Laura (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/one-year-of-scratch-that/id1768770598?i=1000726883821) Come sit with me. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/letters-from-love-a-la-elizabeth-gilbert/id1768770598?i=1000708975964) we can't believe you're here (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) your presence feels like a miraculous little sparkle lighting up the dark sky. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) What I hear us talking about is (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-talk-about-our-internalized-ableism/id1768770598?i=1000675619824) becoming was a pretty disorienting, lonely experience. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) Like we were gonna be lawyers and doctors and like be wearing suits or something. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reparenting-money-discomfort-and-social-media-exits/id1768770598?i=1000721491548) I have literally gashed the control panel of the passenger side door out with my wheelchair as I transferred in and out of this car for the last 15 years. And if anybody sits in the passenger seat, it does look like I'm trying to kidnap them (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-navigate-the-comparison-game/id1768770598?i=1000724368415) oh, this is, this is very different than I thought what almost 40 was gonna look like. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reparenting-money-discomfort-and-social-media-exits/id1768770598?i=1000721491548) I doubt myself all the time (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/what-is-a-real-mom/id1768770598?i=1000670390310) I shrunk from the eye of the storm (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/what-is-a-real-mom/id1768770598?i=1000670390310) I don't know what the hell I'm doing. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/showing-up-when-we-dont-know-the-outcome-with/id1768770598?i=1000725500600) oh, dear Lord. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/showing-up-when-we-dont-know-the-outcome-with/id1768770598?i=1000725500600) I am so quick to feel like, oh, you are ruining this. And if you could just get it right (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-human-with-lisa-olivera/id1768770598?i=1000680542914) We were at the pool. I didn't bring a towel. I didn't bring a towel to the pool. Can we use your towels? Oh, my God. Like, what. What is that? (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-navigate-the-comparison-game/id1768770598?i=1000724368415) the moment when you show up and you feel like the child in a room full of adults. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-navigate-the-comparison-game/id1768770598?i=1000724368415) this little duck that looks really peaceful on top of the water, but underneath, I'm just paddling, like, furiously. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-talk-about-our-internalized-ableism/id1768770598?i=1000675619824) and I couldn't let anyone know it (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) This is the dirty secret. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-talk-about-our-internalized-ableism/id1768770598?i=1000675619824) And nobody can know that, actually, I'm like, I shouldn't be doing this, and I need to keep pretending like I can. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-talk-about-our-internalized-ableism/id1768770598?i=1000675619824) the failure of not matching (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/what-is-a-real-mom/id1768770598?i=1000670390310) when we immediately think like, oh, I should know (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) what the fuck is that? (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/what-is-a-real-mom/id1768770598?i=1000670390310) It was like grief. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/what-is-a-real-mom/id1768770598?i=1000670390310) It was shame. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/what-is-a-real-mom/id1768770598?i=1000670390310) it is feeling like a lot of doing and grasping and, like, white knuckling. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) I can never stop working relentlessly and fearfully to get it right, get it right, get it right. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) nose to the grindstone (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) I don't think I'm capable of feeling easy breezy (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) It feels all tangled and kind of ugly. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-talk-about-our-internalized-ableism/id1768770598?i=1000675619824) Tell me if I'm wrong. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) Did others feel this way? (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) As I'm understanding it right now in the very middle of it (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-talk-about-our-internalized-ableism/id1768770598?i=1000675619824) Yep. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-talk-about-our-internalized-ableism/id1768770598?i=1000675619824) I'm raising my hand here, (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) Was everyone just pretending to be okay, or was I broken? (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) oh, no. No. No. No. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) I just don't buy it. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/what-does-disability-teach-us-about-building-community/id1768770598?i=1000671275005) There was also this (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-human-with-lisa-olivera/id1768770598?i=1000680542914) There was a way that you were trying to help yourself survive even in that fumbling (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-human-with-lisa-olivera/id1768770598?i=1000680542914) I'm holding myself together with harshness and rigidity and (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/an-ode-to-therapy-internal-family-systems-with-sacha-mardou/id1768770598?i=1000682855477)why I oughta. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reparenting-money-discomfort-and-social-media-exits/id1768770598?i=1000721491548) oh, (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/an-ode-to-therapy-internal-family-systems-with-sacha-mardou/id1768770598?i=1000682855477)the speed and rush and flurry and chaos and check, check, check. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/letters-from-love-a-la-elizabeth-gilbert/id1768770598?i=1000708975964) Because so many times it felt like my body was not mine. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/returning-to-our-bodies-with-barry-lee/id1768770598?i=1000730392261) oh, like I'm actually in much more pain than I'm letting myself admit. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/returning-to-our-bodies-with-barry-lee/id1768770598?i=1000730392261) and and how do we, like, not keep our bodies rigid (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-human-with-lisa-olivera/id1768770598?i=1000680542914) What if your most important job was to notice, to witness breath, tears, goosebumps, heartbeats? Look! (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-2024-2025/id1768770598?i=1000682315502) just, like, stop to look at a trail of ants in a sidewalk crack. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/what-is-a-real-mom/id1768770598?i=1000670390310) Listen to the gasp from the back seat at the sight of a sunrise. Mama, take a picture. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-2024-2025/id1768770598?i=1000682315502) oh, there's my breath. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-human-with-lisa-olivera/id1768770598?i=1000680542914) Oh, there I am in there. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-to-human-with-lisa-olivera/id1768770598?i=1000680542914) You feel it, right? (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/flipping-the-script-on-disability-with-lucy/id1768770598?i=1000700579122) Yes, dear Lord (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/showing-up-when-we-dont-know-the-outcome-with/id1768770598?i=1000725500600) I have goosebumps up to my cheeks (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/flipping-the-script-on-disability-with-lucy/id1768770598?i=1000700579122) Mhmm. I mean, you know it in your body probably. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) One breath at a time. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/letters-from-love-a-la-elizabeth-gilbert/id1768770598?i=1000708975964) watch me (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/trading-the-status-quo-for-the-risk-of/id1768770598?i=1000713075303) Breathe in and out. We're all seeing things differently. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/flipping-the-script-on-disability-with-lucy/id1768770598?i=1000700579122) We are learning (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dear-listener/id1768770598?i=1000670390397) we are recalibrating (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-hilarious-heartbreaking-with-shane-hannah-burcaw/id1768770598?i=1000709889205) in flux (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) reorienting, and it is dizzying. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) The hints come in little bread crumbs, and I think you can trust it. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) horses don't have an ability to lie to humans (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/trading-the-status-quo-for-the-risk-of/id1768770598?i=1000713075303) grab the reins and trust that gut feeling (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/trading-the-status-quo-for-the-risk-of/id1768770598?i=1000713075303) That is the thing we have control over, trying to show up, trying to show up again. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/letters-from-love-a-la-elizabeth-gilbert/id1768770598?i=1000708975964) One day at a time, baby. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/showing-up-when-we-dont-know-the-outcome-with/id1768770598?i=1000725500600) it will be glorious and unbearable (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-navigate-the-comparison-game/id1768770598?i=1000724368415) And yes, (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-navigate-the-comparison-game/id1768770598?i=1000724368415) it was funny because we made it so. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-hilarious-heartbreaking-with-shane-hannah-burcaw/id1768770598?i=1000709889205) Yes. Yes. Yes. Okay. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-teach-our-kids-to-be-in-community-with-all/id1768770598?i=1000678888820) we can use goals as playgrounds. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) You can just shift the question. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) What are the things you're moving towards versus just what you're going against? (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reparenting-money-discomfort-and-social-media-exits/id1768770598?i=1000721491548) That's freaking metal. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/reparenting-money-discomfort-and-social-media-exits/id1768770598?i=1000721491548) I think a new answer is emerging in me and I don't know what it is yet. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/getting-off-the-conveyor-belt-of-production/id1768770598?i=1000693008631) but I do know that my body responded (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/an-ode-to-therapy-internal-family-systems-with-sacha-mardou/id1768770598?i=1000682855477) I'm paying attention to how my body feels right now. You know? (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/an-ode-to-therapy-internal-family-systems-with-sacha-mardou/id1768770598?i=1000682855477) It's, like, so uncomfortable and hard to let things be messy (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-teach-our-kids-to-be-in-community-with-all/id1768770598?i=1000678888820) And I think it has been messier than I expected, but (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/flipping-the-script-on-disability-with-lucy/id1768770598?i=1000700579122) But that messy middle was so important. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/an-ode-to-therapy-internal-family-systems-with-sacha-mardou/id1768770598?i=1000682855477) grappling with the real limitations of my body. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-do-we-navigate-the-comparison-game/id1768770598?i=1000724368415) Wouldn't it be lovely, if you could grow wings and fly? (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/flipping-the-script-on-disability-with-lucy/id1768770598?i=1000700579122) Of course there's grief. There's loss. (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/flipping-the-script-on-disability-with-lucy/id1768770598?i=1000700579122) but two things can be true at the same time. 🎙️ Blessed Be the Body with Tatum Tricarico
Tatum Tricarico (https://www.instagram.com/blind_person_in_area/?hl=en) embodies a set of identities we don't always see together – she is a proud Disabled person, a Queer woman of faith, and a recent graduate from divinity school on her way to becoming a pastor. Tatum knows, first-hand, a lot of the wounds disabled and queer people have felt inside religious communities, and she's here to offer all of us – the ones on the outside and inside – new scripts for understanding the divine. Check out Tatum's forthcoming book, Blessed Is the Body (https://heraldpress.com/9781513815459/blessed-is-the-body/), a reflection on disability justice, the holiness of inclusion and acceptance, disabled leadership, the finitude of our bodies, and allowing space for lament and acceptance. Whether you grew up hearing your body is sinful or haven't read a page of the Bible, this episode offers us a tender reframe on how we could think about our bodies and what needs (or doesn't need) fixing. Tune In to Hear Us Talk About: ⛪️ Tatum's early experiences with disability, queerness, and religion. 🧳 What it feels like to Tatum to embody a (disabled, queer, religious) role full of tension and contradiction. 🐧 Finding God in the "in between" spaces, like penguins. 🍃 Why Tatum had to let go of who she thought God was. 🏳️🌈 What Tatum thinks religious communities are missing out on when they exclude people. 👩🦯➡️ The yuck history of churches fighting to be excluded from the Americans with Disabilities Act. 💌 Tatum's decision to stay in the church, even as she continues to think creatively about God. Mentioned In Today's Episode: Find Tatum on Instagram @blind_person_in_area (https://www.instagram.com/blind_person_in_area/?hl=en) Pre-Order her book from Herald Press (https://heraldpress.com/9781513815459/blessed-is-the-body/)or Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/Blessed-Body-Disability-Justice-Community/dp/1513815458/) Tatum's addition to the Scratch That Spotify playlist (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6Uw4GlamUfPw1IOWHvYgpy) of songs that have held us – "Sight" by Sleeping At Last (https://open.spotify.com/track/42JgROeFDz7u50qFRfv8iV) Nancy Eiesland's book The Disabled God: Toward a Liberatory Theology of Disability (https://www.abingdonpress.com/product/9780687108015/) Amy Kenny 's book My Body is Not a Prayer Request: Disability Justice in the Church (https://bakerpublishinggroup.com/products/9781587435454_my-body-is-not-a-prayer-request) As Always: Check out Caitlin and Rebekah's Book Shop (https://bookshop.org/shop/scratchthat)! Tyler has a unique ability of finding the simplest, sturdiest revision to break open the one-dimensional world in which we often live. Today, we talk with her about how she came to rewrite scripts around bodies and grief. (And! We get a sneak peek at a future script she might like to dismantle and rewrite.) We are still basking in the glow of this conversation✨ Tune In to Hear Us Talk About: 🫀 How Tyler ended up writing the picture book that all of us needed. 💀 The weird similarities in the ways people respond to disability and death. 🎭 How Tyler became the kind of person who can hold onto grief and laughter at the same time. 😬 The weird things people said around Tyler after her mom died and a peek at alternate scripts. ⏳ A cultural script Tyler would like to revise. 🎀 The 3 questions Rebekah's kid really wanted to ask Tyler, and her answers. 🕺 A dash of Myers Briggs/Enneagram chitter-chatter.
